Chuuk Nazarenes dedicate new building
After many years, the Church of the Nazarene on the island of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia has a new home.
The Chuuk Church of the Nazarene celebrated its 17th anniversary 19 November 2017. This is a special celebration for the church not only because of its anniversary but also because they are dedicating their new church building. Philippine-Micronesia Field Strategy Coordinator Stephen Gualberto was the special speaker and led the dedication of this new church building.
The church had purchased a property many years ago through the Alabaster Fund, but they needed additional resources to build their facility. The congregation raised funds through sacrificial giving and also donated their time and talent to help build the sanctuary.
A Korean donor who lives in the U.S. also gave a significant amount toward the construction of the church building, and the church was able to buy the building materials at a wholesale price through the generosity of the employer of one of the church members.
The church building is strategically located along the main road on the island of Chuuk and close to many homes with families and children to whom the church is reaching out. Raizza, a 16-year-old girl from the church, has a special burden for the children of Chuuk. She is from the Philippines and speaks Pohnpeian, Chuukese, English, and Tagalog fluently. God is using her and others to make a growing impact on the community. She is well-loved by the children and their parents, and the church also speaks highly of her.
The Federated States of Micronesia has a population of more than 100,000 people on 647 islands, speaking 13 languages. Thirty-one percent of individuals live under the international poverty line of US$1.25 per day. God is calling and raising up workers for this field, including missionaries Timothy and Lydia Kim, who relocated from the Philippines to the island of Pohnpei in 2016. They are actively involved in discipling and church growth in the Pohnpei Church of the Nazarene. (Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific)

Illinois church partners with hospital to feed hungry
Dixon, Illinois
Nazarenes in the News
Sauk Valley Media photo(Sauk Valley Media, 4 January) KSB Hospital and the Living Well Church of the Nazarene are partnering to feed community members in need of a healthy meal.
The two kicked off the Fighting Hunger Feeding Wellness program Thursday, an initiative where extra food from the hospital cafeteria is packaged and taken to the church at 116 E. First St. before being distributed to those who might lack access to regular or nutritious food.
People can pick up the dinners from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and either take them home or eat at the church, no questions asked.
The program came about in an effort to curb food insecurity in the area, which affects nearly 13 percent of the Lee County and 21.5 percent of its children. Of those children, 30 percent aren't eligible for food assistance programs like SNAP or WIC.

Bethlehem to Nazareth to ... Topeka?
Topeka, Kansas
(Topeka Capitol-Journal, 22 December) When you’re born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth and your father is a pastor, chances are pretty good you’re destined to become a preacher yourself.
Such is the journey taken by the Rev. Branson Roberts, pastor of Topeka’s First Church of the Nazarene, 1001 S.W. Buchanan.
Roberts, 52, was born in Bethlehem, Pa., then lived a few years as a young child in the nearby town of Nazareth, Pa., before his family moved to Washington, D.C., and later to the Boston area.

Iowa church celebrates 100 years
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
The Cedar Rapids First Church of the Nazarene was built in 1936. One of the first services in the church was on Christmas Eve 1936. (The Gazette photo)
(The Gazette, 23 December) A New Year’s Day item in the 1926 Gazette announced the formation of the “newest denomination of Cedar Rapids churches,” the Church of the Nazarene, an evangelical Christian denomination. Ten years later, the congregation would celebrate its first Christmas in a church they’d built themselves.
In its beginnings, church members initially met in the home of their first minister, the Rev. E.R. Borton, at Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street SW. By Jan. 1, 1936, they had moved to rental space in the IOOF Oriental Hall at 121 Second St. NE.
The church bought its first permanent home in 1927 — a house that had belonged to pioneer Cedar Rapids grocer, Irving C. Emery, at 400 F Ave. NW.

Thank Offering gifts enable partnership in God’s mission
To Nazarenes around the world:
Traveling the globe, we have the opportunity to see first-hand the ways in which the offerings for the World Evangelism Fund make a difference. Every day people are coming to Jesus and being discipled because the global church family is coming together to be engaged in Kingdom work. We want to thank you for your generosity by way of the recent Thank Offering for the World Evangelism Fund. So far, we have received more than US$1,100,000, and these gifts will have a significant impact as they are invested in transformation.
Your partnership in this work is what makes it possible for the church to reach those around the world with the most urgent needs. Thank you for sharing Jesus with children, women, and men who are now living in the full knowledge of Christ. God asks us to partner with Him in this work, and when our resources are combined with God’s, the results are exponentially greater than our original investment. Now that’s exciting!
With hearts filled with gratitude,
The Board of General Superintendents
Flags of the Nations: Ghana
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Ghana
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Ghana in 1990.
Ghana had a population of 27,499,924 in 2017. That same year, Ghana reported 116 Churches of the Nazarene, 32 of which had been officially organized. Ghana has 9,511 total members.
Located on the Africa Region, Ghana has three Phase 1 districts. For more information about the Africa Region, visit africanazarene.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.
The Global Ministry Center is the mission and service hub of the Church of the Nazarene.
