Caregiving in the News
Tech Advances for Long-Distance Care of Aging Parents
Health News Digest | January 13, 2018
"Caregivers are typically classified as those who are unpaid for their role in caring for [a disabled] family member or aging relatives. In numbers produced by the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, approximately 43.5 million Americans have provided this type of care within the last 12 months. The Alzheimer's Association notes that 15.7 million family caregivers care for someone with age-related dementia. These duties, however, can pull caregivers away from their jobs, which result in missed workdays and a reduced income."
Congress Puts Caregiving on the National Agenda
Minneapolis Star Tribune | January 12, 2018
"Bipartisan legislation is on its way to President Donald Trump's desk that will establish a national strategy to bolster the work of informal caregivers, who provide more than $470 billion in unpaid care for America's older adults each year, often with little support from the workplace or health care system. The RAISE Family Caregivers Act is seen by advocates as a small but notable first step to focus the nation's policies and resources on the growing burdens on family members, whose work will become increasingly vital as society ages in the decades ahead."
Her Sister's Keeper: Caring for a Sibling With Mental Illness
Kaiser Health News | January 9, 2018
"An estimated 8.4 million Americans are caregivers to adult loved ones with a mental illness, most often a son or daughter, parent, spouse or sibling. 'Caregiving situations for siblings pack an extra emotional punch for the caregiver,' said John Schall, who runs the Caregiver Action Network, a nonprofit organization that supports people providing care to loved ones. 'It's not unusual for us to think at some point of being the caregiver for our elderly parents, but it's a whole different thing to be a caregiver for a sibling who we always thought of as equals.' "

New Resources for Caregivers
HRSA Training Curriculum: Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias
Training for the primary care workforce about dementia, and caring for those affected, is essential. The facts are compelling: currently more than five million Americans live with Alzheimer's disease. Ultimately, one out of every three Americans will die from Alzheimer's disease or another dementia. With federal partners and public stakeholders, HRSA created a curriculum - 16 core modules and four supplemental modules - for health educators to train the primary care workforce about dementia care, and to help providers address caregiver needs. Access the training curriculum HERE.
forCare: A Comprehensive Caregiving Tool
Developed by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, the new forCare™ app equips caregivers with information, tools, and resources that can help them support their loved ones. It gives users an easy way to track medication and doctor appointments, access key health information, and coordinate care with others. The app also offers exercises, activities, and tips to help caregivers find balance and avoid burnout. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Learn more HERE.
Caregiving Policy Updates
Senate Passes RAISE Family Caregivers Act
Last week, the Senate passed the bipartisan Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Act (S. 1028/H.R. 3759). The bill directs the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop, maintain, and periodically update a National Family Caregiving Strategy. Now that the Senate has passed the consolidated version of the bill, it will be headed to the President for his signature. Read the new blog from AARP Public Policy Institute's Lynn Friss Feinberg to learn why a coordinated strategy is important now more than ever - and how it can serve as a policy roadmap for action in the public and private sectors.
LEAD Coalition Releases Issue Brief on the Importance of Medicaid
The LEAD Coalition recently released an Issue Brief on the vital role that Medicaid plays in providing essential medical and support services for individuals and families impacted by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The Issue Brief notes that people living with dementia often count on Medicaid for services that Medicare and private insurance do not cover, including long-term care, transportation, and respite for caregivers. Read the Issue Brief here, then call your Members of Congress at 202-224-3121 and tell them, "Protect Medicaid: no cuts, no caps, no block grants!"
