August 19-25, 2017
Caregiving needs double as end of life nears
U.S. News and Health Report | August 22, 2017
"Reliance on caregivers doubles as people near death, and half of those caregivers -- typically unpaid family members -- report having no time for themselves, a new study indicates. The research used a nationally representative sample of about 2,400 older adults in the United States. The study authors found that caregivers provided nearly twice the number of hours of help each week to dying individuals than to those not at the end of life."
The case for changing "caregiver" for cancer patients
HuffPost | August 19, 2017
"Prior to my receiving my first breast cancer diagnosis, when I heard the word 'caregiver', I would think of those individuals who worked in nursing homes and other similar facilities or who came to a patient's home to provide medical or physical therapy-type services. Therefore, when I heard my husband and friends referred to as my caregivers, this title did not ring true to me."
Depressive symptoms contribute to caregiver's health decline
Medical News Bulletin | August 22, 2017
"As a caregiver caring for patients with cancer, the entire situation can be very mentally challenging. The effects of stress and depressive symptoms on the caregiver's health have not been well-studied. In an article published in Cancer, a group of researchers led by Kelly Shaffer conducted a study to determine the changes in the physical health of caregivers 2 to 8 years after the relative's cancer diagnosis and the several factors associated with it."
Security issues with health apps for dementia patients and caregivers uncovered by researchers, study
Science Daily | August 21, 2017
"Use caution when entering personal health information into a convenient app on your mobile device, because not all apps are created equal when it comes to protecting your privacy, warns McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School clinicians. In a recent paper, a team of McLean Hospital researchers reported that many health apps designed to assist dementia patients and their caregivers have inadequate security policies or lack security policies altogether."
Survey finds more millennials see caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's as a 'positive' experience
ABC 8 News WRIC | August 21, 2017
"According to a new survey from the Alzheimer's Association, nine out of ten caregivers cite emotional stress as their greatest challenge. The survey also found millennials are more likely to see positive aspects of the experience compared to older caregivers. In fact, 85 percent of individuals in the 22 to 37 age group who were questioned say caring for someone with Alzheimer's strengthened relationships."
Study: Tired family caregivers linked to greater ER visits, higher health care costs for disabled elders
News Medical Life Sciences | August 24, 2017
"Emergency room staff call it a 'pop drop' - when a disabled older person comes in for medical attention, but it seems like the person who takes care of them at home is also seeking a break from the demands of caregiving. It's been hard to actually study the phenomenon. A new University of Michigan study suggests that tired family caregivers are associated with greater ER visits and higher overall health care costs for the person they care for."

Who Is My Brother's Keeper Now?
Caregiving: Yours, Mine and Ours
"In 1976, the concept of family caregiving was not talked about. It was a responsibility assumed by a spouse, parent, or child, the overwhelming majoirty of whom were female. There was no body of knowledge, nor was it covered in the media. This article summarizes the evolution of caregiving in the United States over the past fifty years."
