Hunger in Our Community
Did you know that one in six people in the United States struggles with food insecurity?
Hunger and poverty often go hand in hand, but people living above the poverty line are often at risk of hunger too. In fact, unemployment, rather than poverty, is a better predictor of food insecurity among people living in the United States.
Recent data shows that:
15% of people living in San Diego County are food insecure (estimated at 452,000).
64% of children at risk of hunger in San Diego County are eligible for free or reduced-price school lunch or breakfast.
58,961 children in San Diego County are not eligible for federal nutrition programs, and rely on charities to provide food.
This should concern all of us.
That is why I am spending a few hours this week at a local food distribution center. Volunteers are critical to these charities and help out in many different ways. Most volunteers help by sorting and bagging food packages, which saves money on labor and translates into more food for San Diego County residents. To find a site near you or to learn about what you can do to help solve hunger, visit my website.
Warmly,
