"God's Presence"
Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: Who is this darkening counsel with words lacking knowledge? Prepare yourself like a man; I will interrogate you, and you will respond to me. (Job 38:1-3, CEB)
The Book of Job is one that is not easily understood, yet, it offers many important lessons. First, Job serves as a model for how we might respond to suffering. Job endured his struggle (you might have heard the expression "the patience of Job") and in the end learned invaluable lessons about God's presence and grace. I'd like to offer you these words about God's presence from the writers of The Wesley Study Bible:
God gets our attention however God chooses. The most basic spiritual discipline is attention: paying attention to God. All other disciplines are effective to the degree that they enable us to sense God's presence. God's primary mercy is the gift of God's presence. All other gifts that come to us are reminders, symbols, or shadows of the gift of God's presence. As we discipline ourselves to pay attention to all that is going on around us - the "still, small voices" - we will be more apt to receive God when he comes in the whirlwind of life. (p. 679)
Over the past few weeks in the DSE we've looked at when God has spoken to different people, from Adam and Eve to Job, with the intent of learning precisely what this quote describes - how to hear the still, small voice of God in the midst of all that is going on around us. Thank you for allowing me to share this time with you. When this posts, I will be on my flight from LAX to Ethiopia, so please remember our team in prayer. Dan will be back with the DSE on Monday.
So, as you go about your day today, pay attention. What might God be speaking into your life?
Grace and peace,
Aaron
