Sunday School Lesson Questions for "Heart of Christiainity" for Friday, July 24, 2015 "Questions, Sunday, July 26, 2015" at First United Methodist Church in San Diego, California, United States
Chapter 10,  THE BIG ME,
(We returned July 23 from a two-week vacation in the Bordeaux region, France, which is why you are receiving the questions late.)  Ken
1.  Does Joe Namath, as a self invented personality, represent a generation any more than P.T. Barnum represented the personality characteristics of his generation?
2.  How much influence do you think self-help books have on the making of generational character?
3.  Katharine Graham had the good fortune, in the management of "The Post", to have Ben Bradley as the editor.  Bradley was a tower of certainty in a world of craziness in running a newspaper.  Imagine "The Post" without his character strengths.
4.  Brooks seems to be telling us that culture gives us permission to, and supports us in, our desire to reinvent ourselves. What are your thoughts?
5.  How do cultural shifts come about?  Do they start in the street or are they the creation of intellectual insights, or that and more?
6.  Joseph Campbell told his students at Sarah Lawrence College to "follow your bliss".  Is this not the desire of humanity, or is it only that of the privileged few? Has most of humanity over history been short on self evaluative skills?
7.  Meritocracy - Do you think that Adam II has been subordinated by ambition and achievement?  Has most of humanity always been short on self evaluative skills?
8.  See summarization on pg. 264 proposition No. 8 and Pg. 265 proposition No. 10 - Discussion.
Looking forward to a stimulating class discussion.  Ken Holmgren
