Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Chrostek - Friday, 31 July 2015 from The Resurrection United Methodist Church Downtown in Kansas City, Missouri, United States

Friday, July 31, 2015,
Greetings RezDowntowners,
It is tremendous to write you this morning from the heart of downtown London, England. For the past week, I have been on a tour with 77 other Resurrection members retracing the life of John Wesley and uncovering the impact of his life, mission and ministry. It has been extraordinary to think about how God could move and inspire one, almost imperceptible, person in order to transform the world for hundreds of years. I think God calls each and everyone of us in the very same way. This is what Jesus alludes to when he talks about the kingdom of heaven being like a mustard seed, the smallest of the seeds, or like yeast mixed into dough. God fills us with the Holy Spirit in ways that allow for transformational impact.
I can’t wait to share about all of the sights we have seen and the things we have learned over these past few days. However, one of the most compelling things I have carried with me during my time here is how John Wesley didn’t view his church as his parish, but instead he envisioned the whole world to be his parish. Everywhere Wesley went he sought out opportunities to love, serve and invite others to share in and experience the grace of Jesus Christ. He always sought to meet people where they were with the unending love of Christ. My hope is that we strive to do the very same thing everywhere we go in Kansas City.
This weekend in worship we are continuing our sermon series on Resurrection at the Movies with a focus on The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – 2. Pastor Anne will be preaching live downtown and I hope you’ll invite friends and join us on Saturday and Sunday!
In the meantime, I want to ask for your prayers as we travel back to Kansas City this weekend and check out opportunities to connect with the life of the church here:
Back to School Supplies and Uniform Drive – Last day to bring your supplies and donations to the church is this Sunday, August 2. The start of the school year can be expensive and purchasing school supplies may not fit into a family’s budget when they are struggling to provide for basic needs. Quite often, teachers will pay out of their own pockets for the supplies that students need. Rez Downtown has a long-term commitment to Wendell Phillips, and we have a goal of providing the school supplies and uniforms for every child in that school. Or you can give money to purchase uniforms for the students.
SWAT Brunch Club – Rez Downtown’s SWAT (35-and-older Singles With A Twist) group will meet Sunday, Aug. 2, at 12:30 pm at Urban Table (urbantablekc.com), 8232 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS. Join the group for great food and fellowship. Contact Stephanie Meyers to RSVP at smeyers91@gmail.com For more information, visit rezdowntown.org/swat
Finding Love & Forgiveness – This 3-week course starts Tuesday, Aug. 4, 6:30 – 8:30 pm at 1522 McGee. Come and learn simple, yet powerful, meditative practices capable of creating forgiveness in any circumstance. Each of us has a deep and profound need to be forgiven. Without refining the power and skill of forgiveness in our daily lives, it is not possible for us to give or receive the unconditional love we all yearn to experience. It is through this love that we heal our relationships and ourselves! This class is taught by Diane Breneman, an international speaker and the founding teacher of “Conscious Transformation.” A donation of $25 is suggested but not required; childcare available. To register for the class and childcare, go to rezdowntown.org/loveandforgiveness For more information, contact Kelly.Sisney@cor.org
Save The Date for Boomers Potluck Dinner – Saturday, September 5, at the home of Marilyn Hutchinson. Details to come. For questions, contact Genease Gornowicz atggornowicz@kc.rr.com.
Christmas in October – The Church of the Resurrection mobilizes hundreds of volunteers for Christmas in October each year to help improve the living conditions of elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners in Kansas City. Lend your hands and hearts to this worthwhile community effort Saturday, October 10, and make a tangible difference for someone in need. If you can use a paint brush, rake, caulk gun, putty knife, hammer, wrench, broom, etc. – we’ve got a job for you! No special skills needed; volunteers must be age 14 or older. House Captains and Co-Captains are also needed to help oversee a team of volunteers. To learn more and to sign up, visitcor.org/christmasinoctober.
Please know that I consider it a privilege to serve Christ alongside you in this city. I hope you'll invite friends and join us this Saturday and Sunday in worship as together we continue building Christian community in the center of this city. Have a God-filled Friday and I'll look forward to seeing you soon!
Grace and Peace,
Scott
