Videos Produced by Mental Health Ministries
Over the past 15 years Mental Health Ministries has produced many shows addressing faith/spirituality and mental illness. Mario Barnabe, a member of our Advisory Committee, is a gifted producer. Portions of our shows have been broadcast on the Hallmark Channel and PBS. Three of our DVDs, Creating Caring Congregations,Mental Illness and Families of Faith and Breaking the Silence: Postpartum Depression and Families of Faith have received Telly Awards for their high standard of excellence in the Religious program category.In each show we present a different mental health issue, provide information about that issue and invite persons to share their personal story offer a message of hope. Our shows were originally available only in VHS format. We moved to DVDs as technology changed. Portions of shows were available on the Mental Health Ministries YouTube site. We have been working this year to have all of our complete shows available to be streamed.
This e-Spotlight includes a list of videos that are available on Mental Health Ministries' YouTube channel.The shows will still be available on our DVDs and can be purchased on the website. The short clips are taken from the full length shows and designed to be used in worship or other settings. They are available on the DVD, Mental Health Mission Moments. Most of our full length shows, including Creating Caring Congregations, are available on the two DVD set, Mental Illness and Families of Faith: How Congregations Can Respond.

Creating Caring Congregations

The sharing of personal stories and experiences provides a way to give voice to those who have suffered in silence, and allows churches to begin the process of reaching out and providing compassionate care to those affected by disorders of the brain. Three people tell their stories and how their faith was an integral part of their healing. Congregations can respond using a model that incorporates education, commitment, welcome, support and advocacy.

All too often the term "mental illness" evokes inaccurate, stigmatizing stereotypes. Studies estimate that one-half of people with treatable mental illness do not seek help because of the stigma. Mental health professionals discuss stigma, its affects and moving beyond stigma to hope.

Understanding Depression

An estimated 1 in 10 U.S. adults report depression (CDC). This video lifts of the different types and symptoms of depression. In sharing their stories, persons share how the hope of recovery counters stigma-induced shame, myth and misinformation that keep up to one-half of depressed people from seeking treatment. It also highlights the role people of faith can play in supporting individuals and families struggling with this illness.

Addiction and Depression

Addiction to alcohol and/or drugs often masks an underlying depression. The link between addiction and depression can cause a downward spiral leading to severe health problems, even suicide. Three persons share their stories of addiction and depression that end in recovery and hope.

According to some studies, depression afflicts between 6% and 12% of American high school students. Depression in children and adolescents is easily missed unless parents, teachers, and medical personnel recognize its signs and symptoms. Without the ability to recognize these symptoms, the first inkling a parent may have of the severity of a child's illness is the tragedy of a completed suicide. Families and professionals review symptoms and recommend appropriate actions to take when it is suspected that a child or adolescent is at risk.

Mental Illness and Older Adults

But growing older involves adjusting to life changes that often involve loss: of loved ones, of familiar routines, of physical health. Depression is the most common emotional disorder in older adults, occurring in about one in seven people over 65. The symptoms of clinical depression can be overlooked and untreated when they coincide with other medical illness and life events.

For Better or Worse: A Couple's Journey with Mental Illness

This show gives an intimate look at how a couple deals with relationship changes when one spouse has a mental illness. Stan shares the challenges of taking on the role of caretaker and protector. He discusses the process of walking the fine line between helping to care for his spouse without doing too much and engendering an unhealthy dependency. Susan shares her frustrations with Stan's desire to "fix" her rather than just being present to her, and how the relationship evolves and changes as she moves into recovery. PTSD: Healing and Hope
Complete Show (watch it on YouTube)Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is becoming a major health concern as more of our military men and women return from war zones overseas. Studies indicate that as many as one in five service members returning from Iraq or Afghanistan suffers from major depression or combat stress. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder isn't just limited to those service members in combat roles. Non-combatant jobs in the military, like doctors, nurses, chaplains and other support personnel can also be exposed to traumatic events that put them at risk for developing PTSD. Toni Lopez is featured in our new video, PTSD: Healing and Hope. Toni served for 25 years in the Navy as a physician's assistant treating both military and civilian casualties at combat field hospitals in Iraq.

Eating Disorders: Wasting Away

While it is healthy to watch what we eat and to get enough exercise, people with eating disorders do harm to their bodies because of their obsession about their weight. Approximately ten million people in the United States have an eating disorder with more than 90 percent of those who have eating disorders are women between the ages of 12 and 25. Two families share their struggle in dealing with eating disorders.
