About this webcast:
The perceived conflict between legitimate Torah knowledge and secular knowledge and culture has often figured as a point of controversy around the publication of biographies of rabbinic figures. Following the work of historian Prof. Immanuel Etkes, Dr. Naftali Loewenthal argues that this black and white perception was not shared by rabbis in the pre-enlightenment era. Within this context he appraises recent biographical works on the Rebbe, culminating with "Early Years: The formative years of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, as told by documents and archival data, 1902-1929" by Boruch Oberlander and Elkanah Shmotkin.

Special milestone: 50 years of the Tefillin Campaign for Thursday, 25 May 2017 - Chabad.org in New York, New York, United States

50 Years of the Tefillin Campaign
Dear Friend,
This year we mark a milestone in modern Jewish history: 50 years since the Rebbe—Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory—launched the worldwide Tefillin Campaign.
On the eve of the Six-Day War in June 1967, when many feared Israel’s demise, the Rebbe assured in no uncertain terms that a miraculous victory was in store for it.
Simultaneously, the Rebbe taught of the salutary and transformative effect of every mitzvah on the individual, on the rest of the Jewish people and the entire world, and introduced a revolutionary initiative to help all men of 13 and older observe the Divine commandment to don tefillin
In the years following 1967, the Rebbe added many additional mitzvah campaigns (like the Shabbat Candle Lighting Campaign) to this revolutionary celebration of Judaism and touched the lives of millions of Jews across the globe from all walks of life and levels of observance.
As we mark this special milestone, we welcome you to take a fresh look at the original Tefillin Campaign, as well as enjoy stories, insights and practical information on getting involved with this unique mitzvah and other Mitzvah Campaigns. (Some selected links to follow below.)
We hope you join us!
