The God Pause for Wednesday, 31 May 2017 - The Lutheran seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States - 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13

The God Pause for Wednesday, 31 May 2017 - The Lutheran seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States - 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 1 Corinthians 12:Therefore, I want to make it clear to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says, “Yeshua is cursed!” and no one can say, “Yeshua is Lord,” except by the Ruach HaKodesh.Now there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. Also there are different ways of serving, but it is the same Lord being served. And there are different modes of working, but it is the same God working them all in everyone. Moreover, to each person is given the particular manifestation of the Spirit that will be for the common good. To one, through the Spirit, is given a word of wisdom; to another, a word of knowledge, in accordance with the same Spirit; to another, faith, by the same Spirit; and to another, gifts of healing, by the one Spirit; 10 to another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the ability to judge between spirits; to another, the ability to speak in different kinds of tongues; and to yet another, the ability to interpret tongues. 11 One and the same Spirit is at work in all these things, distributing to each person as he chooses. 12 For just as the body is one but has many parts; and all the parts of the body, though many, constitute one body; so it is with the Messiah. 13 For it was by one Spirit that we were all immersed into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free; and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.-------
"For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and we were all made to drink of one Spirit."
As I am writing this devotion during the Easter Season, Pope Francis and the Coptic Egyptian Church have agreed to recognize each other's baptisms. The Lutherans and the Catholics together kicked off a joint commemoration of the Reformation last October. The council president where I serve in Staten Island is married to the council president of the Catholic Church around the block!
The Spirit heals divisions and gives the church its unity. I once visited the ecumenical Taize community in the south of France. When I asked someone what "denomination" they were part of, I don't remember which one they said, only the implication that those categories and labels no longer apply.
God, send your Spirit, and awaken in every confession of the whole church a holy hunger and thirst for unity in you. Amen.

1 Corinthians 12
:3b No one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit.
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord;
6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and we

were all made to drink of one Spirit. [New Revised Standard Version]
