"What Is My Calling?" for Sunday, 28 May 2017

Today’s Reflection

What is my calling?
Is there something specific I’ve been
called to do?

Which path do I take?
There are so many choices.
Which one do I choose?

Is there really One
who can guide me,
help me make the right choice?
If God is really out there calling me,
why can’t I hear that voice?

When will I be given a sign?
How do I know when
to take a chance?
Can that serenity be mine?
When do I let go, let my heart dance? [Courtney Thompson, age 20]

Prayer: God, there are so many choices in front of me and so
many decisions to make! May I feel assurance that you are with me and
will guide my path. Amen. [

Today’s Question:

How do you make choices? Pray about a choice before you, or pray for someone you know who is making a choice.

Today’s Scripture:

And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.  [John 17:11, NRSV]

"How Grace Looks" for Saturday. 27 May 2017

Today’s Reflection:

MANY YEARS AGO at a very narrow restaurant (literally—it was about fifteen feet wide) in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, I found the following written on the bathroom wall: “Forgiveness means giving up on hoping for a better yesterday.” I thought it was fairly prophetic. It suggests accepting what has happened and moving on.
Years later, in the Trinity Mountains of northern California, I was walking along the main street in Weaverville and saw a piece of paper stuck to the inside of a window facing out that simply said this: How Grace Works: “I forgive you.” “I’m sorry.”
This simple construction reveals an important truth. When we teach our children to apologize, we often make them say, “I’m sorry” first, and then we tell them we forgive them. But how powerful would it be to extend the forgiveness first? Then they are free to offer contrition in safety because they know they are already forgiven, not unlike the woman who washes the feet of Jesus. This is the assurance we have from Jesus. [Christopher Maricle, Deeply Rooted[

Today’s Question:

Describe what a life lived with an attitude of forgiveness looks like?
Today’s Scripture:
After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.
[John 17:1-2, NRSV]

"Unrepented Sin" for Friday, 26

Today’s Reflection:

“WE MAY DISCOVER a lot of junk in the basements of our inner selves. Old wounds, past losses, and shameful deeds may lie covered, out of sight most of the time but still bothersome. A good housecleaning may be needed—not just the living room but the basement as well; not just tidying up a bit but getting rid of accumulated stuff.
Unrepented-of sin prevents us from welcoming Christ into the center of our being. Harmful attitudes and behaviors can obscure the grace of God for us. Metanoia in Greek, “repentance” in English, means a change of mind, a new mental state. We exchange the self-centered mind for the power of the Spirit to free us from harmful practices and attachments.” [J. David Muyskens, Forty Days to a Closer Walk with God: The Practice of Centering Prayer]

Today’s Question:

As you pray today, name any unrepented sin and receive forgiveness.

Today’s Scripture:

So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed. [John 17:5, NRSV]

"Family Love" for Thursday, 25 May 2017

Today’s Reflection:

Family Love—in Surprising Ways

Have you ever thought about the ways your family shows love for you? Some of the ways—providing the things you need, taking care of you, praying for you, making you feel special—are pretty obvious. But some of the ways families show love might not look like love to you—at least, not at first. In fact, you might not always be happy about some of these ways. …
Rules—Sometimes rules seem like they’re only meant to keep us from having fun. Do your homework right after school. Only 30 minutes of screen time. Work before play. … Setting rules is a way a family shows love by keeping us on the right track and helping us learn to be responsible.
Chores—Do you have chores at home? Maybe you’re expected to keep your room clean, take out the trash, take care of a pet, or load the dishwasher. … Chores, believe it or not, are a way your family shows love for you. Working together is an important part of being a family. …
Protection—Families show love for us by protecting us, and sometimes that might mean warning us about dangers and helping us avoid problems. When your parents make you wear a bike helmet or buckle up your seatbelt, they’re showing you that your safety is important to them. When they warn you to stay away from dangerous places and avoid doing things that might harm your body, they’re showing that they care about what happens to you.
Discipline—One of the parts of family love that sometimes seems least fun is discipline—facing the consequences of our behavior when we mess up. … But it’s our parents’ job to help us learn right from wrong, and part of that is being accountable for our choices and behavior. [Pockets, May 2017]

"Conversion" for Tuesday, 23 May 2017
Today’s Reflection:

CONVERSION IS GOING ON all the time within us and within the world. … While the change of turning toward God may seem like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it is in reality a continual process. We may think that we have turned fully toward God; then we discover another dimension of God, and we know immediately that more conversion is possible and necessary if we are to move Godward in all of life.[Rueben P. "Forgiveness and Peace" for Monday, 22 May 2017
Today’s Reflection
AS CHURCH COMMUNITY, we have been commissioned to announce the words of Christ’s forgiveness to one another. This is how Christ has chosen to offer himself to us. Now it’s our job, yours and mine, to walk into the dungeons of fear and guilt as Jesus did. It’s our job to walk into the rooms where people cower in the corners, afraid of hearing “How could you?” Now it’s our job to speak words of peace and reconciliation, to announce God’s forgiveness. That’s the gift we can give one another. [L. Roger Owens, What We Need Is Here]

Today’s Question:

Where do you see opportunities to speak forgiveness and peace?
Today’s Scripture:

They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” [Acts 1:11, NRSV]

This week we remember:
Bede (May 25).
BedeBede
May 25

Known to us today as "The Venerable Bede," this saint was a wise one. He lived in England 673 to 735, spending his life from age
7 in the Wearmouth Abbey in Northumberland. As a Benedictine, his hours would have followed a regular schedule of worship and prayer, study, teaching, and writing.
Bede wrote 25 commentaries on the Bible, many of which are still used today. He also wrote the book History of the English Church and People. Writing and teaching in English, Bede helped to spread the good news of Christianity to the Anglo-Saxon world.
If St. Bede had taken the
Spiritual Types Test, he definitely would have been a Sage. His feast day is May 25. (Art is an illustration from the 1493 book, the Nurenberg Chronicle.)

Acts 1:6-14
Psalm 68:1-10, 32-35
1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11
John 17:1-11
Scripture Text:
Acts 1:When they were together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore self-rule to Isra’el?” He answered, “You don’t need to know the dates or the times; the Father has kept these under his own authority. But you will receive power when the Ruach HaKodesh comes upon you; you will be my witnesses both in Yerushalayim and in all Y’hudah and Shomron, indeed to the ends of the earth!”
After saying this, he was taken up before their eyes; and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 As they were staring into the sky after him, suddenly they saw two men dressed in white standing next to them. 11 The men said, “You Galileans! Why are you standing, staring into space? This Yeshua, who has been taken away from you into heaven, will come back to you in just the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
12 Then they returned the Shabbat-walk distance from the Mount of Olives to Yerushalayim. 13 After entering the city, they went to the upstairs room where they were staying. The names of the emissaries were Kefa, Ya‘akov, Yochanan, Andrew, Philip, T’oma, Bar-Talmai, Mattityahu, Ya‘akov Ben-Halfai, Shim‘on “the Zealot,” and Y’hudah Ben-Ya‘akov. 14 These all devoted themselves single-mindedly to prayer, along with some women, including Miryam (Yeshua’s mother), and his brothers.
Psalm 68:1 (0) For the leader. A psalm of David. A song:

(1) Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered;
let those who hate him flee from his presence.
(2) Drive them away as smoke is driven away;
like wax melting in the presence of a fire,
let the wicked perish in the presence of God.
(3) But let the righteous rejoice and be glad in God’s presence;
yes, let them exult and rejoice.

(4) Sing to God, sing praises to his name;
extol him who rides on the clouds
by his name, Yah;
and be glad in his presence.

(5) God in his holy dwelling,
is a father to orphans and defender of widows.
(6) God gives homes to those who are alone
and leads prisoners out into prosperity.
But rebels must live in a parched wasteland.

(7) God, when you went out at the head of your people,
when you marched out through the wilderness, (Selah)
(8) the earth quaked, and rain poured from the sky,
at the presence of God.
Even Sinai [shook] at the presence of God,
the God of Isra’el.
10 (9) You rained down showers in plenty, God;
when your heritage was weary, you restored it.

32 (31) Let envoys come from Egypt,
Let Ethiopia stretch out its hands to God.
33 (32) Sing to God, kingdoms of the earth!
Sing praises to Adonai, (Selah)
34 (33) to him who rides on the most ancient heavens.
Listen, as he utters his voice, a mighty voice!
35 (34) Acknowledge that strength belongs to God,
with his majesty over Isra’el and his strength in the skies.
1 Peter 4:12 Dear friends, don’t regard as strange the fiery ordeal occurring among you to test you, as if something extraordinary were happening to you. 13 Rather, to the extent that you share the fellowship of the Messiah’s sufferings, rejoice; so that you will rejoice even more when his Sh’khinah is revealed. 14 If you are being insulted because you bear the name of the Messiah, how blessed you are! For the Spirit of the Sh’khinah, that is, the Spirit of God, is resting on you!

5:Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that at the right time he may lift you up. Throw all your anxieties upon him, because he cares about you.
Stay sober, stay alert! Your enemy, the Adversary, stalks about like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Stand against him, firm in your trust, knowing that your brothers throughout the world are going through the same kinds of suffering. 10 You will have to suffer only a little while; after that, God, who is full of grace, the one who called you to his eternal glory in union with the Messiah, will himself restore, establish and strengthen you and make you firm. 11 To him be the power forever and ever. Amen.
John 17:1 After Yeshua had said these things, he looked up toward heaven and said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, so that the Son may glorify you — just as you gave him authority over all mankind, so that he might give eternal life to all those whom you have given him. And eternal life is this: to know you, the one true God, and him whom you sent, Yeshua the Messiah.
“I glorified you on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, glorify me alongside yourself. Give me the same glory I had with you before the world existed.
“I made your name known to the people you gave me out of the world. They were yours, you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, because the words you gave me I have given to them, and they have received them. They have really come to know that I came from you, and they have come to trust that you sent me.
“I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given to me, because they are yours. 10 Indeed, all I have is yours, and all you have is mine, and in them I have been glorified. 11 Now I am no longer in the world. They are in the world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, guard them by the power of your name, which you have given to me, so that they may be one, just as we are.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary: Acts 1:6-14
Verses:
1:1The former treatise - In that important season which reached from the resurrection of Christ to his ascension, the former treatise ends, and this begins: this describing the Acts of the Holy Ghost, (by the apostles,) as that does the acts of Jesus Christ. Of all things - In a summary manner: which Jesus began to do - until the day - That is, of all things which Jesus did from the beginning till that day.
1:2After having given commandment - In the 3d verse Acts 1:3 St. Luke expresses in general terms what Christ said to his apostles during those forty days. But in the 4th Acts 1:4 and following verses he declares what he said on the day of his ascension. He had brought his former account down to that day; and from that day begins the Acts of the Apostles.
1:3Being seen by them forty days - That is, many times during that space. And speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God - Which was the sum of all his discourses with them before his passion also.
1:4Wait for the promise of the Father, which ye have heard from me - When he was with them a little before, as it is recorded, 24:49 .
1:5Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost - And so are all true believers to the end of the world. But the extraordinary gifts of the Holy Ghost also are here promised.
1:6Dost thou at this time - At the time thou now speakest of? not many days hence? restore the kingdom to Israel? - They still seemed to dream of an outward, temporal kingdom, in which the Jews should have dominion over all nations. It seems they came in a body, having before concerted the design, to ask when this kingdom would come.
1:7The times or the seasons - Times, in the language of the Scriptures, denote a longer; seasons, a shorter space. Which the Father hath put in his own power - To be revealed when and to whom it pleaseth him.
1:8But ye shall receive power - and shall be witnesses to me - That is, ye shall be empowered to witness my Gospel, both by your preaching and suffering.
Psalm 68:1-10, 32-35
The occasion of this psalm, seems to have been David's translation of the ark to Zion, which was managed with great solemnity and devotion. For the first words are the very same which Moses appointed for such occasions, Numbers 10:35 , and the following verses pursue the same matter. Thence he falls into a description of some of the glorious works of the God to whom this ark belonged. But because David knew that both himself and the ark were types of Christ, and that the church of Israel were a type of the catholick church, consisting of Jews and Gentiles, and that the legal administrations were types of those of the gospel, he therefore by the spirit of prophecy, looked through the types, to the great mysteries of Christ's resurrection and ascension, and of the special privileges of the Christian church, and of the conversion of the Gentiles, and intermixes passages, which immediately belong to these things, although the words be so ordered, that they carry a manifest allusion to the present actions, and may be applied to them, in a secondary sense.
Chapter Overview:
He first prays against God's enemies, and for his people, ver. 1 - 3.
Then praises God, for his greatness and goodness, ver. 4 - 6.
For his wonderful works, ver. 7 - 14.
For his special presence in his church, ver. 15 - 17.
The ascension of Christ, and the salvation of his people, ver. 18 - 20.
His victories over his enemies, and favours to his church, ver. 21 - 28.
The accession of the Gentiles to the church, ver. 29 - 31.
An awful acknowledgment of the glory and grace of God, ver. 32 - 35.
To the chief musician, A psalm or song of David.

Verses:
68:4Jah - Is an abbreviation of the name Jehovah, which the Heathens pronounced Jao. Before him - Before the ark where he is present, as David is said to dance before the Lord, upon this occasion, 6:14 .
68:5Habitation - In heaven.
68:6Rebellious - Those who rebel against God.
68:7Wentest - In the cloudy pillar, as their captain leading them up out of Egypt.
68:8Dropped - Poured down great showers, which accompanied those mighty thunders.
68:9Weary - Dry and thirsty, and parched with excessive heat, and ready to faint for want of rain, Psalms 63:1 .
68:10
Thy congregation - The people of Israel. It - This land for the use of thy people: which God did by designing it for them, and expelling the old inhabitants; by furnishing it with all sorts of provisions, and making it fruitful by his special blessing.Poor - Such thy really were, when God undertook the conduct of them into Canaan
68:33Heavens - The highest heavens; dwelling there in infinite glory, and from thence looking down upon all the inhabitants of the earth, and ruling them by his almighty power. Of old - From the beginning of the world; whereas the ark was only some hundred years old. A voice - His gospel, published by Christ and his apostles, assisted by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven; which might well be called God's voice, and that a mighty voice, because it produced such great and wonderful effects.
68:34Ascribe - Acknowledge that he is able to do whatsoever he pleaseth. Excellency - His excellent power and goodness. Is over - Dwells among them. He is indeed the universal Lord, but in a special manner, he is the God of Israel.
68:35Terrible - Deservedly to be feared.
1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11
4:12Wonder not at the burning which is among you - This is the literal meaning of the expression. It seems to include both martyrdom itself, which so frequently was by fire, and all the other sufferings joined with, or previous to, it; which is permitted by the wisdom of God for your trial.Be not surprised at this.
4:13But as ye partake of the sufferings of Christ - 4:1 , while ye suffer for his sake, rejoice in hope of more abundant glory. For the measure of glory answers the measure of suffering; and much more abundantly.
4:14
If ye are reproached for Christ - Reproaches and cruel mockings were always one part of their sufferings. The Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you - The same Spirit which was upon Christ, 4:18 . He is here termed, the Spirit of glory, conquering all reproach and shame, and the Spirit of God, whose Son, Jesus Christ is. On their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified - That is, while they are blaspheming Christ, you glorify him in the midst of your sufferings, 4:16 .
5:6The hand of God - Is in all troubles.
5:7Casting all your care upon him - In every want or pressure.
5:8But in the mean time watch. There is a close connexion between this, and the duly casting our care upon him. How deeply had St. Peter himself suffered for want of watching! Be vigilant - As if he had said, Awake, and keep awake. Sleep no more: be this your care. As a roaring lion - Full of rage. Seeking - With all subtilty likewise. Whom hemay devour or swallow up - Both soul and body.
5:9Be the more steadfast, as ye know the same kind of afflictions are accomplished in - That is, suffered by, your brethren, till the measure allotted them is filled up.
5:10Now the God of all grace - By which alone the whole work is begun, continued, and finished in your soul. After ye have suffered a while - A very little while compared with eternity.Himself - Ye have only to watch and resist the devil: the rest God will perform. Perfect - That no defect may remain.Stablish - That nothing may overthrow you.Strengthen - That ye may conquer all adverse power. And settle you - As an house upon a rock. So the apostle, being converted, does now "strengthen his brethren."
John 17:1-11
Chapter Overview:
In this chapter our Lord prays,
  1. For himself, ver. 1 - 5. 17:1 - 5
  2. For the apostles, ver. 6 - 19; 17:6 - 19
    and again, ver. 24 - 26.
    17:24 - 26
  3. For all believers, ver. 20 - 23. 17:20 - 23 And
  4. For the world, ver. 21 - 23. 17:21 - 23
In his prayer he comprises all he had said from 13:31 ,
and seals, as it were, all he had hitherto done, beholding things past, present, and to come. This chapter contains the easiest words, and the deepest sense of any in all the Scripture: yet is here no incoherent rhapsody, but the whole is closely and exactly connected.
Verses:
17:1Father - This simplicity of appellation highly became the only - begotten Son of God; to which a believer then makes the nearest approach, when he is fullest of love and humble confidence. The hour is come - The appointed time for it; glorify thy Son - The Son glorified the Father, both before and after his own glorification. When he speaks to the Father he does not style himself the Son of man.
17:2As thou hast given him power over all flesh - This answers to glorify thy Son. That he may give eternal life, &c. - This answers to that thy Son may glorify thee. To all whom thou hast given him - To all believers. This is a clear proof that Christ designed his sacrifice should avail for all: yea, that all flesh, every man, should partake of everlasting life. For as the Father had given him power over all flesh, so he gave himself a ransom for all.
17:3To know - By loving, holy faith, thee the only true God - The only cause and end of all things; not excluding the Son and the Holy Ghost, no more than the Father is excluded from being Lord, 8:6 ; but the false gods of the heathens; and Jesus Christ - As their prophet, priest, and king: this is life eternal - It is both the way to, and the essence of, everlasting happiness.
17:4I have finished the work - Thus have I glorified thee, laying the foundation of thy kingdom on earth.
17:5The glory which I had - He does not say received - He always had it, till he emptied himself of it in the days of his flesh.
17:6I have manifested thy name - All thy attributes; and in particular thy paternal relation to believers; to the men whom thou hast given me - The apostles, and so 17:12 .They were thine - By creation, and by descent from Abraham. And thou hast given them me - By giving them faith in what I have spoken. So 17:9 .
17:7Now they know that all things - Which I have done and spoken, are of thee - And consequently right and true.
17:8They have received them - By faith.
17:9I pray not for the world - Not in these petitions, which are adapted to the state of believers only. (He prays for the world at 17:21 ,23, that they may believe - That they may know God hath sent him.) This no more proves that our Lord did not pray for the world, both before and afterward, than his praying for the apostles alone, 17:6 - 19, proves that he did not pray for them also which shall believe through their word, 17:20 .
17:10All things that are mine are thine, and that are thine are mine - These are very high and strong expressions, too grand for any mere creature to use; as implying that all things whatsoever, inclusive of the Divine nature, perfections, and operations, are the common property of the Father and the Son. And this is the original ground of that peculiar property, which both the Father and the Son have in the persons who were given to Christ as Mediator; according to what is said in the close of the verse, of his being glorified by them; namely, believing in him, and so acknowledging his glory.
17:11Keep them through thy name - Thy power, mercy, wisdom, that they may be one - with us and with each other; one body, separate from the world: as we are - By resemblance to us, though not equality.
