"Psalm 23 (7)" for Friday, 26 May 2017 - Deaf Devo - The Deaf Missions in Council bluffs, Iowa, United States - Bible Reading: Psalm 23:5
Psalm 23:You prepare a table for me,even as my enemies watch;
you anoint my head with oil
from an overflowing cup.
-------
Verse 5 of Psalm 23 says, "You prepared a meal for me in front of my enemies. You welcomed me as an honored guest. My cup is full and spilling over." A good shepherd makes sure that his sheep have enough to eat. If the sheep do not have enough to eat, they may become sick and weak. The shepherd wants his sheep to be happy and satisfied.
In Bible times, it was important for the owner of a house to make a visitor feel welcome. He might have his servant pour oil on the person's head. The owner of the house would also make sure that the visitor had plenty to eat and drink.
In the same way, God gives us many good things. God blesses us each day. He gives us food to eat and a place to live. God gives us our family and friends. But most important, God gives us salvation through His Son, Jesus. God wants every person to obey and follow Jesus.
Thank God today for the many ways He blesses you.
"Give thanks to the Lord and call out to him! Tell the nations what he
has done! [Psalm 105:1]
PRAYER: Thank You, Father, for everything You give me to enjoy. But most of all, thank You for Jesus. In His name. Amen.

"Psalm 23 (6)" for Thursday, 25 May 2017 - Deaf Devo - The Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States - Bible Reading: Psalm 23:4
Psalm 23:Even if I pass through death-dark ravines,I will fear no disaster; for you are with me;
your rod and staff reassure me.
-------
The second part of Psalm 23:4 says, "Your rod and staff comfort me." Shepherds use two important tools - a rod and a staff. A shepherd uses a rod to discipline his sheep or as a weapon to fight off wild animals. Sometimes sheep can become stuck in holes in rocks. Then the shepherd uses his staff to lift the sheep from the hole. He also uses his staff to guide the sheep in the way he wants them to go.
Some people have compared a shepherd's rod to the Bible. The Bible shows us when we are doing something wrong. In this way, the Bible disciplines us. The Bible also helps us fight off the devil. We can resist the devil when we remember God's teaching in the Bible.
The shepherd's staff can be compared to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit lives in Christians. He guides us to do right things. The Holy Spirit also comforts us when we are sad and encourages us when we are discouraged.
Depend on the Bible and the Holy Spirit to help you be a strong Christian today.

"Be strong and brave, and wait for the Lord's help." [Psalm 27:14b]
PRAYER: God, I will depend on Your Word and Your Spirit to help me stay strong. In Jesus' name. Amen.
