This Week In Caregiving
June 10 - June 16, 2017
The New York Times | June 15, 2017
"Nearly one in five adult children at some point provide care for at least one elderly parent, according to a new study by the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. The burden is particularly demanding for daughters, who spend as much time on such care as spouses of older adults, and as much time as sons, in-laws, grandchildren and other relatives combined."
"This study explored the caregiving experiences of wives of patients with prostate cancer. Twenty wives revealed those older, educated, or married longer were less burdened by caregiving, but needed more information. Findings contribute new dimensions in caregiving for patients with prostate cancer and their wives."
St. Louis Post-Dispatch | June 11, 2017
"Stretched thin by the needs of your children and your elderly parents? Try this "sandwich generation" solution: Move your young adults in with their grandparents and let them take care of each other."
Marin Independent Journal | June 12, 2017
"After Steve Williams' dementia worsened a year ago, his wife, Noree, quit her job as a school music teacher to care full time for her husband of 46 years - and decided they should move closer to their eldest daughter and her family in San Jose for additional support. Researchers say the Williams family dynamic - where care for an aging family member suffering from dementia falls disproportionately on women - is common and a concern as the population ages and women become more established in the workforce."
"For Gearoid Mannion and his wife, Michelle, who live in County Clare, Ireland, air travel with their two autistic sons, Conor, 9, and Darragh, 7, is usually nothing short of a nightmare. The noise level, crowds and announcements at airports overwhelm the boys, and waiting in security and boarding lines is a concept that they don't understand, Mr. Mannion said. 'They get red in the face and start running around and crying and screaming or run toward the exit, because they want to go back home,' he said."
Forbes, Richard Eisenberg | June 14, 2017
The new AARP Long-Term Services and Supports State Scorecard identifies how states are comparing regarding long-term care services and how it affects family caregivers. "Dr. Bruce Chernof, president and CEO of The SCAN Foundation, said in a statement: 'This new Scorecard shows that it's time for all states to accelerate care improvements for older adults and people with disabilities. States that consistently rank at the top have strategically planned for their aging population across the main sectors of health, housing, transportation and family caregiving.'"
Kiplinger | June 12, 2017
"Perhaps your mother-in-law has dementia, which makes her agitated. A small robot she holds that acts like a cat, including purring, calms her instantly. Afraid she'll wander? Your phone can alert you if she does. Whether already in use or still being tested, aging-in-place technology is improving the aging experience for seniors and family caregivers. Part of the reason: the development of artificial intelligence, or AI, and 'big data'."
A Second Glance
"Even though he'd been working in skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers for over a decade when his father was diagnosed with cancer, Mike Beaty says he wasn't prepared to step in as his dad's primary caregiver. But left with little choice after his mother had a massive heart attack and suddenly died, he stepped in to help his father, who at times was left nearly helpless from the devastating effects of chemotherapy."
"More than 200 SAGE Table dinners took place simultaneously across the U.S., held in partnership with AARP, to launch conversations between LGBTQ people, young and old. 'We are starting a movement to build bridges of understanding between generations,' said Judy Lewis, training and education coordinator for SAGE Metro Detroit."
Research Opportunities
The University of Maryland
The CHAMPIONS team at the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy is looking for family caregivers of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease or a Related Dementia to complete a 45 minute computer-based survey on care management decisions and treatment goals. This survey has been informed by other caregivers, and helps caregivers think through what is most important to them during this journey. Information provided will be used to inform providers, advocacy groups, and state agencies about what any unmet priorities and goals are across the state of Maryland. If interested, please call Tabassum Majid, PhD at 410-706-0871 or email, tmajid@rx.umaryland.edu. All participants receive a $20 gift card for their participation and time.
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio
NAC is participating in the "Improving Hospital Outcomes through Patient Engagement (i-HOPE)" project. The aim of this project is to identify important questions regarding hospital care. We would like you to think about any questions that are left unanswered related to hospitalization or the time immediately following hospitalization. These questions will then be used to design research studies and improve hospital care. We invite you to read more about this project and submit your ideas and questions here.
