The 25th anniversary of Prayers & Squares, The Prayer Quilt Ministry, will be recognized during all three services on the weekend of October 28th & 29th, 2017. These recognition services will be an opportunity for recipients to bring in their prayer quilts and prayer squares to be rededicated and to recognize the Hope UMC congregation for their dedication to promoting prayer through this ministry Remember to bring your prayer quilts and to invite any quilt recipients that you know to these special services.
Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
Lord, make us ready, keep us ready for your work. I believe God uses local churches to do a lot of God’s work. In last year’s Louisiana floods, In Texas’ floods after Hurricane Harvey, In Puerto Rico, I heard the call of local churches reaching out immediately to serve the community. In this case I mean specifically local United Methodist Churches. And I am thankful. Hope United Methodist Church exists for many reasons: to make disciples for Jesus Christ, to provide a setting for worship and fellowship, to bring together people so we can respond to human needs together. Here are some of the ways to keep us healthy and useful: Keep on dwelling in Christ, in the Word of God, in Fellowship and in Prayer. Keep on giving financially for God’s work. Keep on exploring your spiritual gifts to see how God may be using you next. Hope United Methodist Church is a body of believers working for Jesus Christ, and the more each of us responds to God’s call, the more we can do that work together. God bless you and strengthen you, and keep us ready for the next great need and the next call of God.
Pastor Brian Kent
A MEMORIALS AND LIVING TRIBUTE OPPORTUNITY
I hope all of you have had a chance to notice the beautiful new cement bench in the church’s entryway. It will be a constant memorial for the donor of a large amount of money to the church. I imagine that most of you have noticed the deteriorating state of the other cement benches. The church, in the past, has declined putting memorial plaques on physical plant donations, with the flagpoles being the only exception. The Trustees have decided that benches, with appropriate donator and donee information, would be highly appropriate. Large donations are not required to qualify. Donors will be required to pay for only the bench and plaque, but larger donations will, of course, be accepted and highly appreciated. This is your chance to permanently honor those you hold dear in a living tribute or a memorial. For additional information on timing, cost, and appropriate bench plaques, and to sign up for a bench, please call Terry Badger 760 489-8976 (quickest) or e-mail terry72934@aol.com.
MISSIONS CORNER
In facing disasters such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and poverty, do you sometimes wonder what one person or one church can do? Well thankfully, the answer is that one person, each of us, and one congregation, can do something to make a difference! Here are some possibilities, and you may think of more! #1 — The October special offering is for Interfaith Community Services, which our church helped found in 1982. Interfaith deals with the following areas of concern: nutrition and basic needs, housing and shelter, employment, self-sufficiency and support, and behavioral health and recovery. Emergency food help is one way our church continues to help as we bring various food items to donate to the food cart. (Last year over 330,000 meals were served for children, and the need continues to grow.) Please bring your donations each Sunday! #2 — Gently Used Books. We have received a request from Paul Swaekauski at the Wesley Community Health Center in Phoenix for their ROAR (Reach Out and Read) program, where any children who come to the health center can select a book to encourage reading. Bilingual books are helpful too, as many families are immigrants and indigent. New or gently used books rom infant to chapter books for teenagers are needed. Please bring your book donations to the marked box by the food cart, thank you! #3 — Prayer. All of us can pray for those whose lives, homes, schools, etc. have been devastated by recent storms and natural disasters. Let us pray for them, and for first responders and volunteers who are there bringing needed resources and aid. #4 — United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Something to celebrate: our congregation so far has given close to $14,000 to UMCOR for disaster relief! Thank you God that we can contribute, and keep helping, toward these recent emergencies! For further donations, please give through Hope UMC marked for UMCOR. According to information from our District Superintendent John Farley, online donations may be made at: http://www.umcor.org-/Search-forProjects. Checks payable to UMCOR may be sent to: 458 Ponce De Leon Ave. NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30308. #5 — Mission Trips. Also from Rev. Farley: “We are beginning to receive information about UMVIM teams heading to Texas to help with the relief phase from Hurricane Harvey. In order to serve, participants must have received Early Response Team Training. For those with expired certification: Re-certification class on October 14th at Aldersgate UMC in Tustin. For those wishing to be trained for the first time: two events scheduled: (1) October 21st at First UMC in San Diego, and (2) October 28th at Simi Valley UMC.” Registration is online: CalPacUMC.org/disasterresponse. Cost is $40, with some financial help available. For more info contact Judy Lewis, Cal-Pac UMVIM/Disaster Response Coordinator, cell phone 909-731-8248. #6 — Pick up a Thanksgiving bag to be filled with food for the GOOD NEIGHBOR CENTER to distribute. They should be returned to Church on Alternative Christmas weekend (Nov. 11-12). Please continue to pray for these and other reaching out efforts as we continue to respond to those in need, and thank you for all you already are doing! — Carol Millspaugh Outreach and Missions Chair

MUSIC NOTES
This Month in the Music Ministry ... It’s hard to believe that we are already into October, rehearsals, and Christmas music! September rehearsals have gone very well, and we are excited for this month to begin! October 7 & 8 is youth weekend, AND the adult choirs will sing a beautiful anthem dedicated to all the youth called, “Hear the Prayers for Our Children.” The band and youth will have fun worshipping together that weekend as well! The Joyful Noise Children’s Choir will sing their first song of the new season on October 15, called “I Wonder How It Felt.” It talks about how it must of felt for Jonah to be stuck in the belly of a whale, and how it felt for other Biblical characters in their circumstances. Such a cute song! Rachel Casey will be guest conducting the choirs that Sunday with a Joe Martin piece called, “Joyful Psalm of Praise.” On Oct. 22, the Hope Ringers will ring a familiar piece called, “All Creatures of Our God and King,” in a very fun arrangement with bells and mallets. The last weekend of October will be wonderfully busy with the Prayers and Squares Quilting Ministry celebrating 25 years! The Choirs will sing a song dedicated to anyone who has ever received a quilt. The SNA band will debut a Laura Story song called, “Blessings.” Also, we will hear our preschool children sing at 10:45, and there will be a Harvest Festival and activities too! Look for more information through the preschool. All Saints Weekend will begin the month of November on the 4th & 5th. The SNA band will debut a song called, “When All Is Said and Done,” and the choirs will sing a beautiful arrangement of “Amazing Grace,” with violist, Annabelle Terbetski from Quartet Nouveau. These songs will accompany a video presentation of those who have passed away this past year. The music ministry doors are always open if you want to join us in singing, ringing, or playing music! In Honor of Those Who Have Passed ... Every year we honor our dear members of the church who have passed away by having a video presentation of collected pictures, put to music in worship by our SNA band on Saturday night, and by our adult choirs on Sunday. To honor those who have passed this year, please send their photo to the church office either by mail, email, or in person. Please have the name as you want it to appear on the screen in the video on the back of the photo. All photos need to be submitted by Oct. 23. The video will be presented on All Saints Weekend, Nov. 4 & 5. Email: Denise.mierlot@hopeumc.com The 2018 Concert Series Schedule is almost ready! In 2018, we will have 7 concerts! Soprano, April Fisher, with accompanist, John Evans, will be here in January. The Rancho Bernardo High School Choral Program along with our very own Hope UMC combined choirs will do a concert on March 4, including a segment of Mozart’s Requiem. Our Artists-in-Residence Quartet Nouveau string quartet will perform in April. Our big CCS Choir Composer Festival will be June 1-3, with composers Joel Raney, Lloyd Larson, and Joseph Martin. The Drought Tolerant Bluegrass Band will return in August. From Rochester, New York, gospel trio, Final Harvest, will come in October, and we will end the 2018 series with our annual Yuletide program. Look for dates and times in next month’s Times of Hope! Hope UMC Choirs Singing at Carnegie Hall! There will be 30 singers from our adult choirs singing at Carnegie Hall on June 17, 2018. This past May, composer Pepper Choplin, invited us to sing his 8-movement cantata, “Our Father, a Journey through the Lord’s Prayer” in New York. We will join over 200 singers on stage with full orchestra and guest soloists to sing about our Lord 5 Jesus Christ in one of the biggest secular arenas in the country. Mr. Choplin was one of our guest composers at our annual CCS event, and we performed one of the movements in the afternoon concert. So we already have a head start! We will be singing the entire cantata over the course of our Lent season and in the March 4th concert of our concert series, so you don’t have to fly to New York to hear it! The trip will be June 14-18, and we will also get to see a Broadway show! Flute Choir Update ... There are 7 flutes so far! If you’re interested in joining, call Wendy Kallen at 858.722.8572. We will be meeting on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 1:00pm in the sanctuary. Save the Date for Yuletide! Yuletide will be here before you know it, so mark those calendars! STEPHEN MINISTRY
Hope United Methodist church supports a Christ-centered, non-judgmental, training-based and confidential caring ministry that is an extension of pastoral care. It is a one-on-one caring and visitation program for church family members who find themselves in a situation of loss or grieving. Our pastors have a large flock to care for and unfortunately find it hard to meet with dear friends who need weekly visits. Stephen Ministry enables our church to care for those needs. Through 50 hours of training and bi-weekly supervision meetings, Stephen Ministry enables the body of the church to care for the body of the church. If you have a care need or any questions, please find one of our Stephen Leaders: Mike or Susie Warriner, Darren Blass or Diana Hall or any of Stephen Minsters who can be found wearing blue name tags.
NEXT G.A.N.G. MEETING: OCT. 8 Fourth and fifth graders are encouraged to come to our next meeting on Sunday, Oct. 8 from 4:30- 6:00pm. Each evening will wrap up with pizza, so please bring $5 to help pay for it if you can. If you have food allergies, please bring dinner from home. BIBLES FOR 3RD GRADERS ON OCT. 7-8
The weekend of Oct. 7th & 8th, we’ll continue our tradition of presenting Bibles to 3rd graders (and to older children who don’t have one) during worship services. Call the church office and add your child’s name to the Bible List, being sure to provide correct spelling and to indicate which service you’ll attend that weekend. Then mark your calendar for the Bible Workshop on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 8 from 2:00-4:00 in Covenant Hall. We’ll have some fun activities to help the kids learn how to use their new Bibles.
BIBLE WORKSHOP
Sunday, Oct. 8 from 2:00-4:00 in Covenant Hall Third graders — and older kids who just received their Bibles — are invited to this fun interactive workshop where we will learn how to use this wonderful tool God has given us. The afternoon will feature a Bible Treasure Hunt, Bible Bingo, and pizza! It helps us if we know how many people to expect, so if you know you can come, please RSVP to Carrie in the office (858.485.5840 x103). Don’t forget to bring your new Bible with you!
