Blessed To Be A Blessing
The LORD said to Abram, "Leave your land, your family, and your father's household for the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation and will bless you. I will make your name respected, and you will be a blessing." (Genesis 12:1-2, CEB)
This call story is arguably the most important in the Old Testament because of how Abram's obedience to God is oft used as a model of faith. As the writers of the Wesley Study Bible (CEB) put it, "Abram is called to abandon the security of his homeland, social sanctuary, and family support, in order to become the head of a new household, even while he himself is still childless, and without knowing where he is going." As John Wesley is known for saying, Abram was being asked to trust God farther than he could see Him.
When all was said and done, Abram trusted an "unknown future to a known God" and the promise that God would bless him so he could be a blessing. In many ways that is what a life of faith is all about - trusting God's promises and responding to God's blessings in our lives by blessing others. How might you be a blessing to someone today?
Grace and peace,
Aaron
