How to Get Compensation When Caring for Aging Parents
Consumer Reports | January 3, 2018
"It's no surprise that many family members who devote significant time and money to caregiving wonder whether it's possible to be compensated for their work. 'The majority of people who contact us are asking precisely that,' says Sima Schoen, a resource specialist at the Family Caregiver Alliance, a nonprofit advocacy group in San Francisco. The answer is maybe, if you're persistent. 'There are a handful of ways you may be able to get paid,' says Schoen."

Caregiving Policy Updates
House Passes RAISE Family Caregivers Act
Last month, the House of Representatives passed the bipartisan Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Act (S. 1028/H.R. 3759). The bill directs the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop, maintain, and periodically update a National Family Caregiving Strategy. Advocates should now encourage their Senators to pass the RAISE Act without delay, so that it can be signed into law by the President as soon as possible. LEAD Coalition Releases Issue Brief on the Importance of Medicaid
The LEAD Coalition recently released an Issue Brief on the vital role that Medicaid plays in providing essential medical and support services for individuals and families impacted by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The Issue Brief notes that people living with dementia often count on Medicaid for services that Medicare and private insurance do not cover, including long-term care, transportation, and respite for caregivers. Read the Issue Brief here, then call your Members of Congress at 202-224-3121 and tell them, "Protect Medicaid: no cuts, no caps, no block grants!"
