Scripture Text to read: Mark 2:23 One Shabbat Yeshua was passing through some wheat fields; and as they went along, his talmidim began picking heads of grain. 24 The P’rushim said to him, “Look! Why are they violating Shabbat?” 25 He said to them, “Haven’t you ever read what David did when he and those with him were hungry and needed food? 26 He entered the House of God when Evyatar was cohen gadol and ate the Bread of the Presence,” — which is forbidden for anyone to eat but the cohanim — “and even gave some to his companions.” 27 Then he said to them, “Shabbat was made for mankind, not mankind for Shabbat; 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of Shabbat.”

John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Mark 2:23-28
Verse 23
[23] And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
Matthew 12:1; Luke 6:1.
Verse 26
[26] How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
In the days of Abiathar the high priest — Abimelech, the father of Abiathar, was high priest then; Abiathar himself not till some time after. This phrase therefore only means, In the time of Abiathar, who was afterward the high priest. 1 Samuel 21:6.
Verse 27
[27] And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
The Sabbath was made for man — And therefore must give way to man's necessity.
Verse 28
[28] Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Moreover the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath — Being the supreme Lawgiver, he hath power to dispense with his own laws; and with this in particular.____________________________

Sermon Story "Authentic Sabbath" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 26 July 2015 with Scripture: Mark 2:23 One Shabbat Yeshua was passing through some wheat fields; and as they went along, his talmidim began picking heads of grain.
From this passage of Scripture, we recognize that the Pharisees are comeing hard down on Jesus and His disciples for picking grain from the grain fields. rubbing it together to be ready to eat, and then eating the food. The Pharisees appealed to Jesus that He and His Disciples broke the Law for the Sabbath. Jesus was not against the Torah or the Law of God, but Jesus was alluding to calling Himself the Son of Man that He is the promised Messiah and actually was there when God gve the Law to Moses. What Jesus was apparently or possibly trying to tell the Pharisees was that He is the Lord of the Sabbath and He gets angry with the way people have taken God's Law o oppress other people or to keep people from coming to God. This is saying that Jesus is not against the Sabbath which is rest from our labors becase in other passages of Scripture Jesus takes time for rest and Sabbsth to regain His composure nd power to build His intimate relationship with the Father. Yes, God rested on the seventh day after He created everything and gave this command to Moses for the Israelites and all other people who come to Him to take a time to rest from the daily tasks we are called to perform. This was taken as to be Saturday for the Jews where they would rest from their daily labors and to worship God for all He has done and is doing in their lives. We who have recognize that Jesus is the Messiah worship God on Sunday because this is the day that God raised Jesus from the dead to give us life and to fulfill His Mission to redeem all Israel as well as all other people known as Gentiles from their sins. We recognize that if we do not take time to rest from our daily tasks we have a tendency to beocme too tired to continue and forget who has given us new life and the strength to live from day to day. Where We recognie that we have failed to take a Sabbath Rest from our daily task, we come to repentance and allow God to redeem us and give us the rest we need through the taing the Body of Jesus and eating it and taking His Blood and drinking it as we celebrate The Holy Sacrament of The Holy Eucharist. We come to receive from God singing the Hymn "O God, You Made the Sabbath Day" by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette
1. O God, you made the Sabbath day,
Your gift, your law, your healing way.
You also made, within each heart
A longing for this day apart.
2. You gave your children, long-oppressed,
Your freeing gift of Sabbath rest.
You give us Sabbath freedom, too:
Our lives are more than work we do!
3. Life's sacred rhythm seems long gone;
The world, unblinking, carries on.
Your Spirit calls us! Slow our pace
That we may hear your word of grace.
4. Christ Jesus lives! He makes us new!
On Sundays now, we worship you.
With hearts uplifted, joy restored,
Your church goes out to serve you, Lord.
