"Covenant symbols"
God said to Noah and his sons with him, "I am now setting up my covenant with you, with your descendants, and with every living being with you-with the birds, with the large animals of the earth, leaving the ark with you. I will set up my covenant with you so that never again will all life be cut off by floodwaters. There will never again be a flood to destroy the earth." (Genesis 9:8-11, CEB)
Thanks be to God that God is a God of second chances. If God wasn't, we would all be in trouble. That is why, throughout history, God has continued making covenants with us, establishing God's promises for our lives while expecting nothing in return but our faithfulness to God and God's ways.
Symbols have been important parts of such covenants, serving as reminders of the covenant's obligations-like the symbolism of our Baptism and the Lord's Supper. Generally, these covenant symbols have served to remind usof our obligations. In the story of Noah and the ark, however, God established the rainbow as the covenant symbol to remind God of God's obligations to humankind. This should give us confidence that, in spite of our difficulty at keeping our part in covenants, God will always keep God's obligations.
What "covenant symbols" bear particular importance in your life? How does God "speak" to you through these symbols?
Grace and peace,
Aaron
