(A)ct of (R)andom (K)indness
God said to Noah, "The end has come for all creatures, since they have filled the earth with violence. I am now about to destroy them along with the earth, so make a wooden ark..." (Genesis 6:13-14a, CEB)
I don't think I will ever again be able to read the story of Noah and the Ark without thinking of the movie Evan Almighty. If you haven't seen it, Steve Carell stars as newly-elected Congressman Evan Baxter and Morgan Freeman portrays God. God calls Evan to build an ark on the lot next to his house in suburban Virginia. It really is a very funny movie.
Like just about everyone else who God has ever called, Evan resists God at every turn. The following exchange happens as Evan's resistance begins to wear out.
God: How do we change the world?
Evan Baxter: One single act of random kindness at a time.
God: [spoken while writing A-R-K on ground with a stick] One Act, of, Random, Kindness.
God might not be calling you to build an ark (though we have had an awful lot of rain lately), but God just might be calling you to perform an act of random kindness. Someone did that for me just today. What might you do?
