Faithful Love
After these events, God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" Abraham answered, "I'm here." God said, "Take your son, your only son whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him up as an entirely burned offering there on one of the mountains that I will show you." (Genesis 22:1-2, CEB)
Yesterday's DSE was about the call of Abram and the beginning of his journey of faith. God had asked Abram to leave behind his past for a new life. Today's story can be seen as a conclusion to Abraham's journey of faith, except now God is asking Abraham to give up his future. Both times, God was seeking Abraham's radical obedience - and neither time did Abraham disappoint. Abraham proved his exceptional loyalty to God.
But did God really want Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, the son whom he loved? The commands in verse 2 - "take...go...offer" - seem to leave little room for misinterpretation. However, as Abraham came to discover, it wasn't Isaac that God wanted after all. God simply wanted to know that Abraham loved God above all else and that Abraham would always be faithful. Why does God expect such faithful love from us? Because God, without fail, remains faithful to us.
Grace and peace,
Aaron
