Sunday's Sermon & Scripture:
Mark 6:1 Then Yeshua left and went to his home town, and his talmidim followed him. 2 On Shabbat he started to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They asked, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom he has been given? What are these miracles worked through him? 3 Isn’t he just the carpenter? the son of Miryam? the brother of Ya‘akov and Yosi and Y’hudah and Shim‘on? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4 But Yeshua said to them. “The only place people don’t respect a prophet is in his home town, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” 5 So he could do no miracles there, other than lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6 He was amazed at their lack of trust.
Then he went through the surrounding towns and villages, teaching.
7 Yeshua summoned the Twelve and started sending them out in pairs, giving them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He instructed them, “Take nothing for your trip except a walking stick — no bread, no pack, no money in your belt. 9 Wear shoes but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place; 11 and if the people of some place will not welcome you, and they refuse to hear you, then, as you leave, shake the dust off your feet as a warning to them.”
12 So they set out and preached that people should turn from sin to God, 13 they expelled many demons, and they anointed many sick people with oil
and healed them.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for  Mark 6:1-13
Verse 3
[3] Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.
Is not this the carpenter? — There can be no doubt, but in his youth he wrought with his supposed father Joseph.
Verse 5
[5] And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.
He could do no miracle there — Not consistently with his wisdom and goodness. It being inconsistent with his wisdom to work them there, where it could not promote his great end; and with his goodness, seeing he well knew his countrymen would reject whatever evidence could be given them. And therefore to have given them more evidence, would only have increased their damnation.
Verse 6
[6] And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.
He marvelled — As man. As he was God, nothing was strange to him.
Verse 7
[7] And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;
Matthew 10:1; Luke 9:1.
Verse 8
[8] And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:
He commanded them to take nothing for their journey — That they might be always unincumbered, free, ready for motion.
Save a staff only — He that had one might take it; but he that had not was not to provide one, Matthew 10:9; Luke 9:3.
Verse 9
[9] But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.
Be shod with sandals — As you usually are. Sandals were pieces of strong leather or wood, tied under the sole of the foot by thongs, something resembling modern clogs. The shoes which they are in St. Matthew forbidden to take, were a kind of short boots, reaching a little above the mid-leg, which were then commonly used in journeys. Our Lord intended by this mission to initiate them into their apostolic work. And it was doubtless an encouragement to them all their life after, to recollect the care which God took of them, when they had left all they had, and went out quite unfurnished for such an expedition. In this view our Lord himself leads them to consider it, Luke 22:35: When I sent you forth without purse or scrip, lacked ye any thing?
Verse 10
[10] And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.
Matthew 10:11; Luke 9:4.
Verse 12
[12] And they went out, and preached that men should repent.
Luke 9:6.
Verse 13
[13] And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
They anointed with oil many that were sick — Which St. James gives as a general direction, James 5:14,15, adding those peremptory words, And the Lord shall heal him - He shall be restored to health: not by the natural efficacy of the oil, but by the supernatural blessing of God. And it seems this was the great standing means of healing, desperate diseases in the Christian Church, long before extreme unction was used or heard of, which bears scarce any resemblance to it; the former being used only as a means of health; the latter only when life is despaired of.

Another Year's Gratitude
I can't say enough good words about how wonderful Vacation Bible School was last week. The sheer number of people involved is impressive; but the spirit of joy and caring that was woven throughout the week was truly spectacular. I feel so blessed to be a part of this congregation, and to get to collaborate in ministry like this. Besides the regular lessons of Bible School, our young people helped us raise almost $2000 for Imagine No Malaria, moving us closer to our congregation's goal of $20,000 (and toward our Annual Conference goal of $3 million)!
I also want to share words of gratitude as we cross another anniversary of my appointment to this church. Yesterday, I began my fourth year as your Pastor. The words I posted on Facebook sum up my feelings: "I still think it's possible that I have the awesomest job, ever." I'm so glad to be with you for another year.
So, here in middle of our calendar year, I'm marking the beginning of a new year in this appointment, grateful for the spectacular staff colleagues I get to work with, for the gifted and gracious lay leaders of this church, and for all the people who make up our congregation. I'm so excited about the things that are going on and growing here.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

From Pastor Molly: On Marriage

I've read a multitude of reflections about last week's Supreme Court ruling, establishing marriage equality as a protected civil right in the US. I want to add a few things to the conversation in our congregation.
I know that our church includes people who are gay and straight, as well as people who are married, single, divorced, widowed and in long-term relationships; I also know that our congregation includes people who hold diverse theological perspectives. I am grateful to be a part of a community that includes such diversity.
I want to say a few things, clearly:
-Our church is a place where all people are welcome and included, regardless of sexual orientation.
-I believe there is great value in marriage, to our civil society and to our religious life. I celebrate commitments like marriage that encourage our becoming people of faithfulness, generosity, compassion and care. I hope and expect that marriages will help our church, making us a people more focused beyond ourselves and onto God...

God in the Details

Weekly thoughts on theology, church life and more from our Pastor, Molly Vetter.
On Marriage by Molly Vetter

I’ve read a multitude of reflections about last week’s Supreme Court ruling, establishing marriage equality as a protected civil right in the US.
I hope and expect that marriages will help our church, making us a people more focused beyond ourselves and onto God.
Marriage is a strange thing: it asks a lot of us. True faithfulness in marriage is so much more than our sexual behavior; it demands we live with generosity and selflessness. I have been privileged to know marriages that have shown me the beauty possible in human relationships, by the grace of God.
That blessing of God is something that no church or court can control.
Jesus never spoke directly about homosexuality. In our own time, this conversation is at the center of public debate. I pray that we will remember the messages at the center of Christ’s good news, and that they will speak with relevance into our time.
Personally, I am so glad about the Supreme Court ruling; I think of what it will mean for a cousin, who can now formally adopt her wife’s child. I think with sadness about those for whom this came too late: friends who lost life partners before their marriages were legally recognized, and who faced administrative hurdles in handling even the details of their deaths. I think of what a blessing it has been to me to have a community recognize and honor my own marriage, and I pray that others will have that same experience.
Our United Methodist Church has said a lot of different things about same-sex marriage: our California-Pacific Annual Conference (our regional church body) again this past month reaffirmed our desire to be fully inclusive of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) persons, including in ordination and marriage. We again petitioned the General Conference of the UMC (our global church body) to change policies that prohibit this full inclusion; presently, our global Church’s official policies speak against same-sex marriages.
I’ve been up close to these conversations at our most recent General Conferences (in 2008 and 2012). Even so, I have become convinced that the most important conversations we have are the ones we have with the communities right around us—and with the people in our families and congregations. May we be a people who seek mutual understanding and who extend to one another grace.
Want to read more? Here are two articles I have found helpful:
-Tony Campolo, a prominent evangelical preacher, recently went public with his change of mind regarding same-sex marriage. Read his reflections here.
-David Lose, President of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, writes a cleardescription of the seven passages in the Bible that are used to oppose homosexuality, and describes how they are often interpreted, here.

Annual Conference 2015 by Johnna Kosnoff

June was a busy month! We celebrated Baby Davenport, youth and fathers. We offered a questionnaire to get your feedback on worship. We hosted a week of VBS with a mid-week cookout and a Sunday pancake breakfast to raise almost $2,000 for Imagine No Malaria. Some of us attended Annual Conference in Redlands, CA and those of us going on the July Baja mission trip had our first team meeting. I’m a little tired so the staff must be exhausted! Please keep them in your prayers as they continue to plan sermons, program Sunday school or youth lessons, activities and the upcoming drama camp, answer our questions and pray for us while managing the day to day needs of our congregation. They work faithfully for the Kingdom of God and we should let them know we are grateful.
I am thankful to have been among the group who attended annual conference; it was my first! I missed the opening worship on Thursday to attend my son’s high school graduation. However, I joined the others to hear Dr. George Tinker’s messages on Friday and Saturday mornings. Dr. Tinker is a Native American and his messages for our Judgment, Justice and Joy theme were sometimes challenging. I felt especially blessed to hear our Bishop share a special story about her childhood and early ministry in her heart-felt sermon on Saturday evening.
Attending the Legislation Sessions and hearing the proposed changes to our Book of Discipline was interesting. Yes, sometimes people debated long and hard over which words to use. However, our Book of Discipline helps define who we are as United Methodists so the language is important. Debates seem reasonable. It was fun to see many youth and young adults at the conference. They led an inspiring outdoor worship on Friday night.
One of the things I enjoyed most was spending time with others from our church. We weren’t together the entire time; yet, we shared some meals, attended some worship and meetings together, debated and hung out into the evening talking and learning about one another. It felt like a local church retreat with a big UMC focus. You may learn more at www.calpacumc.org/ac2015 or feel free to ask George or Peggy Mercer, Jonathan Tuuholoaki, the staff or myself questions. All are welcome at the conference and not required to be voting members so consider joining us next year!

A Caring Community
Did you know that we have a ministry that organizes meals and other assistance for church folks in times of need? In the past, we've helped arrange rides to medical appointments, meals for people recovering from surgery, and more. Leila Grantz coordinates this ministry, using online sign-up tools. If you want to be a part of the group that she emails when there is an opportunity to help, or if you know someone who's in need of a little help, please contact the church office or Leila.
We are currently organizing meals in for the Schempp family during Daniel's deployment, and also coordinate delivery of a Shared Bread meal to the Davisons each week.
