Hope All Church Retreat • Sept. 25-27, 2015
Our fifth annual “All Church Retreat” will be at Camp Cedar Glen the weekend of
September 25-27. This is a time for families, couples, and singles to get to know
others from Hope UMC. We will be sharing the camp (and several activities) with
Escondido First UMC and other local UMCs. The retreat will start Friday evening
after dinner and run through Sunday lunch. Activities include worship, group
studies, and fun activities (un-talent show, swimming, climbing wall, archery,
hiking, star gazing, etc.) Pastor Brian will present a three-session program:
Our Church Family:
• We are all one huge adopted Family in Christ.
• From our diversity the Holy Spirit knits us together.
• The Church Family boosts every individual family.
There will be age-specific activities during the group studies. The cost for camp is $110 per adult and $55 per child/youth (ages 3 to 17). Infants are free. No childcare provided. The maximum cost per two-adult family is $275; the maximum cost per single adult family is $165. Applications for Camperships through the Hope UMC Foundation are available at sign-up or in the office. Registration will be available on the Patio at all services during August, and at the church website www.hopeumc.com. Payment of a non-refundable deposit of $25 per family group is required at sign-up, with payment in full by September 7.
DISCIPLE CLASSES STARTING IN SEPTEMBER!
Registration begins September 1st
The classes are fun and energizing! Learn about the Bible in new ways. Share your ideas and your faith with others in a small intimate class setting. The classes are taught by experienced teachers and members of our church who study alongside of you. Read specific Bible passages each week and then study your handbook
before class.
The DISCIPLE Bible Study is an in-depth study of Scripture. Through DISCIPLE, persons are strengthened in their faith and guided into service and ministry.
The series of four studies will take participants from Genesis through Revelations twice. It is recommended that students take DISCIPLE I first. The other three classes can be taken in any order.
This year we are offering Disciple I and Disciple II.
See flyer for information.
Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
Psalms for Everyday Life:
The Psalms are 150 expressions of human emotions to God. The Psalms are Hebrew Poetry, with every first line re-stated or developed in the second line. The Psalms are an ancient hymnal. Their translations have provided the ideas and the rhythms for Jewish and Christian worship for thousands of years. Sometimes the words can be heard and received across the ages and across cultural changes, with little explanation needed. But sometimes the only make sense once you know the geography, the culture, and the stories behind them. For the next several weeks I will be sharing in church about “The Stories Behind the Psalms.” On Saturday July 11 and Sunday July 12, we will use the Royal Psalms. They can really sound like overstatements for human beings — and could be misused politically — but find their fulfillment in King Jesus. On the following Sunday, July 19, we will wrestle with some of the Psalms filled with the emotions of grief and anger. When you find yourselves with these same emotions you can use them as tools to weep or shout your emotions to God. On July 26, we will celebrate with Psalms of joy and thanksgiving, praise and peace. Do we dare hope for such elated emotions? Yes! Join me in this faith-filled wrestling match with words that inspire but also confuse, words that express the height and the depth of our being, words that show we can bring every emotion and our whole selves to God.
Blessings and Peace,
Rev. Brian Kent Senior Pastor
NEW MEN’S STUDY
The Making of a Man Thursday Knights, a men’s small group, is inviting all Hope Men to participate in a six-week Bible study starting July 9th. The study (Thursdays 7 to 8:30 PM at in the Covenant Hall library) addresses the book, The Making of a Man – How to Honor God and Live with Integrity, by NFL All Pro football player Tim Brown. This video-based study reveals how faith, family, honor, and integrity have everything to do with true manhood and a life well-lived. Whether you are a rabid fan or have little interest in football, a young man or already facing the fourth quarter of your life, these pages will both challenge and inspire you to become the man you’ve always known you could be.

July MISSION OF THE MONTH:
“HOPE FOR INJURED WARRIORS”
July is the month that we especially remember to support our efforts with the injured service men and women here in the San Diego area. On Sunday, July 12, please stop by the table set up on the patio to view pictures and hear about what Hope has done to help these warriors in their recovery and transition to civilian life. We are also collecting specific items to send to our deployed men and women. Many have had multiple deployments and have once again been called to deploy. Let’s help them keep their spirits up as they are always prepared to defend our country for all of us. Pick up the list of items and put them into the box provided on the patio. One more item, please go to www. torangaal.com to view two amazing injured Marines from Freedom Station on their Ride Across America. Toran lost both legs and suffered a head injury while serving his country. He is riding a recumbent bike (hand pedals only) from San Diego to Arlington, VA. What an amazing young man. Brian is also an amputee and is following Toran in a van to make sure he is safe along the roadways. Toran is riding to benefit the Semper Fi Fund so that other Marines can receive the support he and Brian have been given. They began their journey from Seaport Village on June 1, and as I write this, are in Kentucky. The people of Hope have already made a difference in these young men’s lives, both at the Barracks and at Freedom Station.
Bless you all,
— Norma Dahlvig, (858) 484-3397 w/questions
MISSION CORNER
Fiesta Grande! What a great Mexican Fiesta lunch we had on June 14 to benefit Children of the Promise Orphanage in Tijuana. Between the
lunch and our June Special Offering we raised over $1400 to help the kids. Thank you! Here’s part of a newsletter recently sent by the orphanage:
For 15 years we have been rescuing children from sexual, mental and physical abuse from the red light district in Tijuana. These kids are given love and a safe and warm place with us to receive their
schooling and learning about the Lord ... Theresa (not her real name) just had the best day of her life!! She just had her quincieaniera! What a difference her life is now. She loves the Lord, she is in school and very happy! We rescued her from
her mom 8 years ago. Her mom walked with Theresa around the red light district with no place to live. Her mom does drugs, fed Theresa whatever was on the street and in the trash. The mom sold
herself to men as Theresa looked on. Teresa was dirty, cold and hungry. Her future would be the same as her mom’s if we didn’t do anything. Since Theresa has been with us, her mom has NEVER come to visit her and she is seen still roaming around the red light district. Thank you for helping us to rescue Theresa!! Now, several times a week on her summer school break, Theresa goes to needy orphanages and helps care for the children there. She is a beautiful princess inside and out, especially in God’s eyes!
The July Special Offering will benefit Hope for Injured Warriors, a perfect time to remember our nation and the price so many have paid for our freedom. Please read Norma Dahlvig’s article about a project to help our service men and women overseas. Remember them in your prayers.
The food cart not only needs your donations but also your assistance if you have time to make a delivery of its contents once a month to the Good Neighbor Center in Chollas View or Interfaith Community Services in Escondido. Sharon and Winston Wade have faithfully done this for several years but their schedule is now less predictable
and we need new helpers. Please contact the Sieck’s if you are able to help or would like to work with any of our many missions!

ACOLYTES AT HOPE
At Hope UMC even children can serve God by assisting in Worship services as Acolytes. The Acolyte performs a very important role as he/she brings in the Light of God and lights the taper candles on the Altar to signify the start of the Worship service and then extinguishes the candles and carries the Light of God out into the world at the end of the service. When children reach 2nd grade, they are old enough to serve as Acolytes, and may continue in this role for as long as they like. Some of our Acolytes are now in the Youth
Group but still enjoy serving in this capacity.
Marilyn Fink will hold an Acolyte Training in August for any children 2nd grade and older who would like to become Acolytes. At the training the children will have the opportunity to practice
walking down the center aisle with the candle lighter and then lighting the candles on the Altar so they are comfortable with the process. They will also be able to sign up on the schedule for the
dates and service times that work for them.
Contact Marilyn at finkmarilyn@sbcglobal.net for more information or to let her know you would like to attend the training in August.
