Update: Texas Nazarenes mobilize in wake of Hurricane Harvey
Harvey submerged Interstate highway 45 in Houston with record, widespread flooding on August 27 (Reuters photo).
Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas coast last week as a category-4 storm, dumping 20 trillion gallons of water on the city of Houston alone. The storm made landfall three times in Texas and Louisiana, killing at least 39 people and forcing more than 1 million people from their homes.
Church of the Nazarene leaders are on the ground in Texas assessing needs as volunteers from across the state mobilize to assist their neighbors in need. Nazarene Compassionate Ministries via Nazarene Disaster Response have sent hundreds of Crisis Care Kits to Houston.
At least eight Nazarene churches were affected, and some of the most-affected areas have yet to be reached.
“We do have several churches with storm or flooding damage,” said Jeffrey Johnson, district superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene in South Texas. “Many of our brothers and sisters have flooded homes.”
USA/Canada Regional Director Bob Broadbooks requested prayer for families and individuals in the affected communities.
“We encourage the church to join with others in prayer for those affected and first responders,” he said. “This flood is of historic proportions here.”
More information concerning disaster relief, reports, and the Church of the Nazarene will be updated here as it is made available.

Deadly floods sweep through South Asia
In India, Church leaders began mobilizing relief efforts and Nazarenes in Bangladesh are providing food and water purification tablets for approximately 50,000 people affected by flooding in more than 20 communities. Click here on how to help, pray and give.
Deadly floods sweep through South Asia
Nazarenes provide disaster aid in Bangladesh
Extraordinarily heavy monsoon rains have devastated areas in South Asia recently, including Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. More than 1,200 people have died in the floods — including many children — and more than 40 million people have been affected.
Thousands of cities and villages have been completely inundated. Countless homes have been swept away, and buildings are collapsing under the weight of the water. On Thursday, an apartment building collapsed in Mumbai, India, killing at least 33 people. The floodwaters have damaged or destroyed 18,000 school buildings, affecting the education of nearly 2 million children.
“People across South Asia are used to the monsoon season and often depend on it for their crops, but the amount of rain this year and the flooding that has followed have devastated the region,” said Brandon Sipes, disaster management and humanitarian crisis advisor for Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. “The situation is worsened because a well-developed relief infrastructure is not in place in many areas there.”
Some estimate that one-third of Bangladesh is flooded. In communities surrounding local Nazarene churches, approximately 63,000 people were affected, including more than 7,800 church members from 948 local churches.

Flooding in Bangladesh (Reuters photo)Church leaders began mobilizing relief efforts almost immediately. Nazarenes in Bangladesh are providing food and water purification tablets for approximately 50,000 people affected by flooding in more than 20 communities. After the waters recede, they will also provide rehabilitation programs designed to assist families with growing gardens for food.
In India, plans are in place for churches to deliver food and hygiene items to 12,000 people in affected communities. An immediate response to the Mumbai flooding is being developed, as church leaders visit the affected areas and develop a plan for response. Mumbai is also the location of a new ministry to children and women in a red-light area near a Nazarene church.
According to the World Bank, natural disasters disproportionately affect those living in poverty who are already vulnerable.
“We are grateful for our local and international church, who are actively working to support those impacted by the floods,” Sipes said.
More information will be updated as it is made available.
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Bangladesh in 1992 and has more than 3,000 churches there. More than 100 Nazarene churches exist in Nepal, which the denomination officially entered in 1998. There are more than 2,000 Nazarene churches throughout India, where the church began work as early as 1898.

WMC-AP Renews Partnership for Recording Old Testament Audio

(L-R) Pinky Mayshle, Raffy Santos, Ervz Tia
Manila, Philippines:
Two years ago, World Mission Communications Asia-Pacific (WMC-AP) entered into a ministry partnership with Biblica, to produce the Tagalog translation of the New Testament in audio format.
The New Testament recording was completed last October, 2016. It was a great and humbling experience for the WMC-AP team. Grace Tia, WMC-AP Manager, shared, “It was not all a smooth ride and we experienced a lot of spiritual battles along the way. But God is faithful and He has helped us complete this project so that Filipinos will have more opportunities to hear God’s word and share the Gospel to anyone, anywhere.”
Biblica dates back more than 200 years when they were founded by some of New York City’s leading philanthropists, thinkers, and businessmen with the calling to reach America’s leading city – and ultimately the world – with the gospel. Biblica was also responsible for producing the first audio Bible ever and published the New International Version (NIV), the world’s leading contemporary English translation of Scripture.
This year, the WMC-AP Team reached a new milestone as they have signed another partnership with Biblica to produce the Tagalog translation of the Old Testament in audio format. The audio recording started August, 2017, and is estimated to be finished in two years. Raffy Santos, an adjunct professor of Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary (APNTS), will be the voice talent.
Please pray for the WMC-AP team as they produce this project. Pray for the health of Raffy and all the people involved in this production. Pray that millions of Filipinos will be impacted through this new way of sharing the Word of God.

From death to life - God's Vision for the Yangmei Church of the Nazarene
Six years ago, Yangmei Church of the Nazarene in Taoyuan, Taiwan closed its doors. That appeared to be the end of the story, until Pastor James felt the call of God upon his heart. He, his wife and two children left their home in Taipei and moved to Yangmei and at great personal cost, with no resources and not a single member, reopened the church. Click here to learn more about this story.
From Death to Life – God’s Vision for the Yangmei Church of the Nazarene
For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. [Psalm 56:13

Pastor James and family
Six years ago, Yangmei Church of the Nazarene in Taoyuan, Taiwan, closed its doors. That appeared to be the end of the story until Pastor James felt the call of God upon his heart. He, his wife, and two children left their home in Taipei and moved to Yangmei and at great personal cost. With no resources and not a single member, he reopened the church.
On Sunday, March 5th, 2017, the church held its Annual Church Meeting and worship service with over 100 people present.
A special commemorative service was held before the pastor and church leaders shared their dreams of the future. As a church they looked back in a worshipful ceremony of reverence to our faithful Heavenly Father, and offered respect to their forefathers who had paved the way.
What followed was an exciting time of sharing the vision God had placed on their hearts for the next 10 years. They have called it “Vision 1388″ anticipating that by December 31, 2025 there will be:

Yangmei Church Family
  • 1,000 Total church members
  • 3 locally commissioned cross-cultural workers
  • 8 Licensed ministers in the process of being mentored and discipled
  • 8 Daughter churches planted
The church also set immediate goals for the next two years. They desire to start a Gospel Contact Point primarily for the community in which they would care for the poor, offer after-school classes for children, and connect with families. They also plan to develop a strategy of zealous church expansion with discipleship training, small groups, leadership development and evangelism.
Already the Yangmei Church has put feet to their vision. On March 3, 2017 they together with the Shipai Church of the Nazarene, commissioned one disciple to Cambodia for a long-term mission endeavor.
The Yangmei Church is excited to take as their objective the call of the global Church of the Nazarene to make Christ-like disciples using evangelism and outreach to the poor and marginalized.
Please pray the new life that the Lord has endowed upon the Yangmei Church will continue to flourish, and they will walk in the light of His grace as they share His gospel with their community.

Freedom Sunday supports anti-trafficking ministries
Nazarene churches will join with congregations around the world on 24 September 2017 to participate in Freedom Sunday, a day set aside for worship and prayer around the issue of human trafficking. Click here to learn more about Freedom Sunday.
Freedom Sunday supports anti-trafficking ministriesNazarene churches will join with congregations around the world 24 September to participate in Freedom Sunday, a day set aside for worship and prayer around the issue of human trafficking.
This year, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries has partnered with the Faith Alliance Against Slavery and Trafficking (FAAST) and Stop the Traffik to create a Freedom Sunday worship resource guide for churches to use. NCM is a member organization of FAAST, which is a strategic alliance of Christian organizations working together to combat slavery and human trafficking. Stop the Traffik, a global anti-trafficking advocacy organization, has been producing a Freedom Sunday guide for churches in the United Kingdom. This year, FAAST and Stop the Traffik partnered to create a new resource geared toward evangelical churches. NCM was the lead FAAST member in the creation of the new resource guide.
Since 2014, more than 400 local Nazarene churches have participated in a Freedom Sunday. The Church of the Nazarene’s participation began in coordination with other Wesleyan-Holiness denominations as part of the Wesleyan Holiness Connection. In the same year, the Church of the Nazarene's Board of General Superintendents endorsed a Declaration for Freedom — a document drafted by Wesleyan-Holiness leaders, including Carla Sunberg, who was elected as a general superintendent in June.
Over the three years, churches have taken up a “freedom offering” to support anti-trafficking work led by Nazarene churches. NCM has used those gifts to support the opening of new ministries, including drop-in centers in Mumbai, a mobile intervention clinic in Moldova, small business development for at-risk girls, and church-based prevention.
The Mumbai drop-in ministry, which was started by the Sharon Bethel Church of the Nazarene in December 2016, is called Jivan Asha, which means “Hope of Life.” Through two Jivan Asha centers, 75 children have gained a safe space for education, nutrition, recreation, psycho-social support, and spiritual nurturing. The centers have also reached out to 150 women in prostitution to provide counseling, life skills training, vocational training, medical referrals, and spiritual care. Through the ministry, the church has identified 65 women who are open to new alternatives, and they are working with several women on a path to leaving the brothels.
This year’s freedom offering will be used to support the birth of new church-led anti-trafficking ministries as well as the continuation of ongoing work.
Freedom Sunday is planned for 24 September, but congregations are encouraged to plan a Freedom Sunday at any time that works in their calendar. Freedom Sunday planning resources are available as free downloads through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries at ncm.org/freedomsunday. [Nazarene Compassionate Ministries]
