MISSIONS CORNER
While we watched, Hurricane Harvey left a destructive path in Texas and Louisiana. Cities are flooded, and homes/businesses have been destroyed. People have been injured or died and many are hurting over their losses. This month, the Mission’s Special Offering is designated to help those hurt by Hurricane Harvey by sending 100% to the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s (UMCOR) fund for Harvey. UMCOR is the humanitarian arm of the UMC with 100% of funds do- nated for relief. The September Monthly Special Offering has been designated as “HOPE has a HEART to HELP those HURT by HURRICANE HARVEY.”
According to the UMCOR director, prayers and funds are needed to assist in the recovery efforts. UMCOR was already in Texas before the storm to be ready to go when Harvey made landfall. They have supplied money, food, cleaning buckets, health kits, and other items to those in need. Disaster relief/Recovery is not measured in days but in years. Katrina relief lasted over 8 years, and recovery for Harvey will take at least that long. For more information on UMCOR, please go to the webpage: www.umcor.org. or pick up a brochure in the Visitor’s Booth. Note that the UMCOR brochures have the word “Hope” in the title.
How to help: As demonstrated in the past, Hope has risen to the needs of others. Funds, volunteers, and definitely lots of prayers have been given when disasters have struck. Please pray and donate in September to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The Missions committee has designated $2,000 to UMCOR — Harvey Relief Fund, but more is needed. Please prayerfully consider donating, too.
In addition, the Hope Disaster Relief Team is already going to UMCOR-West in 2018 — the week of April 15th to continue providing relief supplies such as health kits, cleaning buckets, bedding kits, layette kits and whatever is needed to help in the efforts to help those hurt by disaster. There are openings if you would like a hands-on way to help. Please contact me at jimcyn73@hotmail.com. There is a possibility that a work team also be going to Texas. Last February, Hope donated health kits and supplies for “Heart for Hope.” Look for more info in the coming months on both of these opportunities.
With the heart Hope has, please also remember to donate food to the cart to help those in need in San Diego. If you would like more information on Hope Missions, please come to a meeting the 4th Monday of every month in the Jones building. The next meeting is Monday, September 25th. Thank you for your generous and loving hearts! — By Cindy Gleason
Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
I really find it difficult to keep my mind and heart open to the barrage of natural and human tragedies. As a way to respond, I am going back to last week’s sermon to remember how to respond. I am doing this for the million acres burned in Montana, for the many other Western US fires, for Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, for the massive flooding in India and Nigeria, and for the many human- caused tragedies throughout the world.
1) Pray right now. “God, thank you for your active love for the people inn the path of this flood, this
fire, this policy, this war, this disease.” 2) Do not self-deploy. “Lord God, this is bigger than me, a greater need than I can fix. Use me, use
us in your most effective ways. 3) Let people know you care. Who do I know in the Columbia River Gorge (fire area), in Puerto
Rico or Florida, in Corpus Christi or Houston? I’ll call them now. Contact now. Ask again in weeks and months what they need. 4) Donate money to the helping organizations you trust. For me this is the United Methodist
Committee on Relief. Give to the response to any need. Others can do the same for other needs. 5) Prepare for action 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 2 years from now. Honor the First
Responders and neighbors helping neighbors, and be ready for that moment where we can be the most effective, now or later.
Thank you for your response to God and to human need. We are a community of servants in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Each of us can hold prayers and needs and concerns before God. As you hold one group of people before god, I will do the same.
In ministry together,
Pastor Brian Kent

MUSIC NOTES
This Month in the Music Ministry ...
The new season has begun! The adult choirs, Hope Ringers, Joyful Noise Children’s Choir, Axios Youth Choir, and a possible new flute choir, are all back in rehearsals this month! All of this and a new soundboard too! Come on September 9 to SNA and hear a new Chris Tomlin song called, “Fear Not.” Come on September 10 and hear the choirs sing on their first Sunday back in worship, with guest violinist Jennifer Williams and guest flautist Claire Jones accompanying them. On Sept 17, Beth Jones and Wendy Kallen will do a really fun 4-hand piano duet, “Simple Gifts.” Then come on Sept 24 and hear one of our beautiful soloists, Marcia Roberts. On October 1, the Axios Youth Choir will sing, “Love in Any Language” as their first song of the season in honor of World Communion weekend. And just so you can save the date, the Joyful Noise Children’s Choir will sing on October 15, and the Hope Ringers Bell Choir will ring on October 22! We invite you to worship with us each week and feel God’s presence, guidance, and love through music, message, and prayer.
Welcome, New Singers!
Our new season brings new singers! We welcome Stacie Herring, Carol Reed, Lynne & Doug Trumbore, Carol Cruikshank, and Jane Angeles to our 10:45 choir, Voices of Hope! We welcome Robert Lawler to our 9:00 New Wine Ensemble! We are very excited to have these wonderful voices join us! It’s not too late to join. If you are interested in singing with us, please just come to our next Thursday night Voices of Hope rehearsal at 7:15pm. Contact Ginny Lorenz at 858.354.3939 and let her know you’re coming so we can have music ready for you!
YULETIDE • COME SING WITH US THIS CHRISTMAS!
What is Yuletide? It is the music ministry's annual Christmas choral program! It's a chance for
4
people who can’t commit to the whole choir season of 40 weeks, to come for just 10 weeks and sing a variety of Christmas music that’s put together in a thematic way. This year's theme is “Christmas Around the World.” Some of the songs include “O Come, Emmanuel,” “Pat-a- Pan,” “Silent Night,” and “And the Glory of the Lord,” from Handel’s Messiah. The schedule consists of 11 one-hour rehearsals, on Thursdays from 7:30-8:30pm in the sanctuary, 1 dress rehearsal, and 3 performances. The first rehearsal is Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7:30pm. The dress rehearsal is Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 7pm. The performances are Dec. 8, 9, & 10. Please contact Ginny Lorenz at 858.354.3939, or Wendy Kallen at 858.722.8572 to let us know you’re coming so we can have music ready for you! You will also get a rehearsal CD to make it easier to learn the music! Come and sing with us! We will leave a chair out for you ... :)
FLUTE CHOIR? Anyone Interested?
The music ministry is thinking about creating a flute choir. Anyone interested? Wendy Kallen used to play flute many years ago for about 8 years. She is willing to get her flute out, dust it off, and start playing again if others will join her! How does Saturday’s at 1pm sound? Please con- tact Wendy at wendy.kallen@hopeumc, or call her at 858.722.8572 if you’re up to this fun challenge.
The deadline for submissions for the next Times of Hope is 9:00AM, MONDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2017 FOR OCT. 8-NOV. 12, 2017 and beyond. Submit articles to the church office or e-mail to denise.mierlot@hopeumc.com.
WATERSLIDE FUN ON SUNDAY, SEPT. 10!
Kids: wear your bathing suits under your church clothes on Sunday, Sept. 10 and bring a towel. After church, we’ll enjoy lunch, snow cones, and a waterslide while adults attend the Ministry Fair to learn about all the great things going on at Hope! CHILDREN’S CHOIR RESUMES ON SEPT. 17
Children Kindergarten-6th grade are invited to be part of Joyful Noise, the Children’s Choir of Hope UMC, directed by Kathy Askins. Rehearsals are in the Sanctuary on Sundays beginning September 17 from 11:45 (or right after the 10:45 service dismisses) until 12:30. Our Fall performance date is Sunday, October 15 during both morning services. For more info, contact Kathy (858.566.9043 or katstrich@sbcglobal.net) or just join us at rehearsal. 4TH & 5TH GRADE G.A.N.G. STARTS SEPT. 24
G.A.N.G., which stands for God’s Awesome Next Generation, is a fun way for 4th & 5th graders to stay connected to church and each other. During each meeting we play some wild and crazy games, have activities, and a brief discussion that helps us learn a little more about ourselves and our rela- tionship to God. Then we wrap up with pizza, so please bring $5 to help pay for it, if you can. (If you have food allergies, pleas bring dinner from home.) Carin Pratt, Cara Reynolds, and Evan Vigilia lead the meetings through out the year on Sunday evenings from 4:30-6:00pm in the chil- dren’s SS rooms, J1 & J2. Your 4th & 5th grade friends are always welcome! Questions, or con- cerns, please contact Kathy Askins at katstrich@sbcglobal.net, Carin Pratt at cdpratt@mac.com, or Carrie Jaquess at 858.485.5840 x103. BIBLES FOR 3RD GRADERS ON OCT. 7-8
The weekend of October 7-8 we’ll present Bibles to 3rd graders (and 4th & 5th graders who don’t have one). This is a free gift to the children from the church and we don’t want to leave anyone out! Call the church office at 858.485.5840 and put your child’s name on the Bible List. Please give the correct spelling of the name your child would like to have on the presentation page and let us know which service you plan on attending that weekend. BIBLE WORKSHOP
Sunday, Oct 8 from 2:00-4:00
This fun interactive workshop is for children who just received their new Bibles or for kids who got Bibles last year but couldn’t make it to the Bible Workshop. We’ll have some fun activities that will familiarize the kids with this important tool that will guide them on their lifelong Christian journey and we’ll finish up with a pizza dinner. Please try to RSVP for this event by calling the church office at 858.485.5840 so we have enough supplies for everyone. Questions? Give Carrie a call at 858.485.5840 x103 or send an email: cm- jaquess@yahoo.com.
