From Pastor Molly: My Church
This Sunday is our big, fall kickoff for many of our church ministries. At 9:30am, between our two services, we will host a free breakfast and ministry fair at church. You can see some of the plans we have in place for the year ahead, and, best of all, find places to be involved. After all, this is your church.
One of the great strengths of our church community is this: there is work for all of us to do, and a part that each of us can play in the meaningful work we're called to.
This fall, in addition to ongoing groups, we'll be planning and leading a Talent Show and Silent Auction, a special celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Shared Bread, plus some work projects on campus, theater opportunities, and so much more.
I hope you will take time to be with us. It's a great chance to reconnect with each other after summertime, and a great time to talk to someone you don't yet know. It's a good time to see some of the ways you can live out your faith in ministry with the church community.
I hope to see you there.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Matthew 18:15-20
Scripture Text: Matthew 18:
15 “Moreover, if your brother commits a sin against you, go and show him his fault — but privately, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother. 16 If he doesn’t listen, take one or two others with you so that every accusation can be supported by the testimony of two or three witnesses.[Matthew 18:16 Deuteronomy 19:15] 17 If he refuses to hear them, tell the congregation; and if he refuses to listen even to the congregation, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax-collector. 18 Yes! I tell you people that whatever you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven. 19 To repeat, I tell you that if two of you here on earth agree about anything people ask, it will be for them from my Father in heaven. 20 For wherever two or three are assembled in my name, I am there with them.”
John Wesley's Notes-Commemtary: Matthew 18:15-20
Verse 15
[15] Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
But how can we avoid giving offence to some? or being offended at others! Especially suppose they are quite in the wrong? Suppose they commit a known sin? Our Lord here teaches us how: he lays down a sure method of avoiding all offences. Whosoever closely observes this threefold rule, will seldom offend others, and never be offended himself. If any do any thing amiss, of which thou art an eye or ear witness, thus saith the Lord, If thy brother - Any who is a member of the same religious community: Sin against thee, 1.
Go and reprove him alone — If it may be in person; if that cannot so well be done, by thy messenger; or in writing. Observe, our Lord gives no liberty to omit this; or to exchange it for either of the following steps. If this do not succeed, 2.
Take with thee one or two more — Men whom he esteems or loves, who may then confirm and enforce what thou sayest; and afterward, if need require, bear witness of what was spoken. If even this does not succeed, then, and not before, 3. Tell it to the elders of the Church - Lay the whole matter open before those who watch over yours and his soul. If all this avail not, have no farther intercourse with him, only such as thou hast with heathens. Can any thing be plainer? Christ does here as expressly command all Christians who see a brother do evil, to take this way, not another, and to take these steps, in this order, as he does to honour their father and mother. But if so, in what land do the Christians live? If we proceed from the private carriage of man to man, to proceedings of a more public nature, in what Christian nation are Church censures conformed to this rule? Is this the form in which ecclesiastical judgments appear, in the popish, or even the Protestant world? Are these the methods used even by those who boast the most loudly of the authority of Christ to confirm their sentences? Let us earnestly pray, that this dishonour to the Christian name may be wiped away, and that common humanity may not, with such solemn mockery, be destroyed in the name of the Lord! Let him be to thee as the heathen - To whom thou still owest earnest good will, and all the offices of humanity. Luke 17:3.
Verse 18
[18] Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth — By excommunication, pronounced in the spirit and power of Christ.
Whatsoever ye shall loose — By absolution from that sentence. In the primitive Church, absolution meant no more than a discharge from Church censure.
Again I say — And not only your intercession for the penitent, but all your united prayers, shall be heard. How great then is the power of joint prayer! If two of you - Suppose a man and his wife. Matthew 16:19.
Verse 20
[20] For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Where two or three are gathered together in my name — That is, to worship me.
I am in the midst of them — By my Spirit, to quicken their prayers, guide their counsels, and answer their petitions.

The passing of Ron Day Sunday, 9/3,will affect the many of our church family who knew him well as he and Norma have always been part of us and the church. To me, he was friend, church member, choir singer, leader, my employer for 21 years and one whom I always respected for his wisdom, humor and leadership as well as his and Norma's large and beautiful family. Ron was also a fellow Rotarian as was his father, Foster Day. We will all miss him and extend our prayers and sympathy to his wife and family.
Breakfast at church will begin at 9:30 AM this Sunday, 9-10-17 as we visit tables to sign on for opportunities to volunteer for a church job. If you miss the breakfast, check it out following the service and see what you didn't know we needed, and join in as a volunteer.
What? Another Rummage Sale? It seems that the ladies like to work, for here in September, another Rummage Sale is planned for Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 AM to 4 PM. I plan to do my bit to help make it work and so should you if you can. At least you can come and buy stuff like lunch or clothes or stuff.
Donations for Houston
We encourage everyone to donate to UMCOR through the link below. The United Methodist Church pays all overhead costs for UMCOR, which means 100% of donations go to relief efforts. Additionally, UMCOR is a distinct 501(c)3, so many employers will match donations to UMCOR.

-Participate in our You Are Here Ministry Fair and win a free mug.
-Purchase a mug for $10 to take home. (Your purchase also funds a mug that will stay at church for use on Sundays.)

Corazon Building Angels
The last several years, many of you have provided Christmas gifts for the Corazon families in Mexico through our "Christmas Angel" program. We thank you for your generosity. This year, however, Corazon is trying something different for their Fiesta Navidad, or Christmas Party, and we do not need to provide gifts. So, how can you help this year?
You can help pay for the Corazon House Build materials! On Saturday, October 14, Redondo First along with 3 other Methodist Churches will be building a house in Mexico. Our portion of the building cost is $2,250. We need to raise just $300 more to reach this goal!
All you do is take a donation Angel from the bulletin board on the church patio and make your donation. Want to know more about the house build? Talk to George or Peggy Mercer at this Sunday's Ministry Fair!
Readiness 360+: We Want to Hear From You!
This fall, our congregation will join a cohort of United Methodist Churches in our West District for a 15-month project of church growth and deepening vitality. We encourage you to help us start this work by filling out an online survey--it should take fewer than 30 minutes. Find the survey here. Survey code # 8034751127. We encourage you to pray for those who will join the leadership team, and for everyone who will be a part of our shared work!

Our choir resumes this week after being off for the summer. We've had a wonderful string of guest artists, and we're looking forward to another exciting season. However, our tenor section is one voice short, someone who had been one of our most ardent and faithful supporters. Ron Day's love of singing and his support for me, not to mention his financial support of the music program, made it possible to provide the kind of music we've been making. You will be sorely missed here, Ron, and we envy the choir of angels who have just inherited a wonderful tenor voice.
In This Very Room is considered to be one of the all-time "Top 10" modern Christian songs. It was written by Los Angeles-based composer Ron Harris, who, at the time, was music director for Carol Lawrence. Over coffee at Starbucks one day, he told me the story of how he was on the road with Carol, and had been away from home for over a month. He was in New Orleans, and had just gotten off a one hour phone call to his wife. He was sitting on the bed of his hotel room, feeling lonely and miserable, and, looking around at the walls of the room, suddenly came to the realization that there was more to the room than just the 4 walls. Pulling out his electronic keyboard, he began writing a melody to the words that had popped into his head - "In this very room there's quite enough love for one like me...." It's been performed as a solo, as a choral work, with piano, with orchestra, a cappella, and to date, is known to have been sung in the Upper Room – the room generally accepted to be the room where the Last Supper took place – at least twice.
Dan Schutte is one of the most renowned of the contemporary composers in the Catholic world and is one of the founding members of the St. Louis Jesuits, who popularized a contemporary style of church music set to sacred texts sung in English. This was a result of the Second Vatican Council of the early 1960's (also known as Vatican II), which revamped and reformed the Catholic liturgy in an effort to bring it closer to the people (before that, the mass was sung in Latin and the priest kept his back to the congregation throughout). He is based in San Francisco, has written over 120 popular hymns and mass settings, and continues to be one of the most influential figures in the world of contemporary Catholic liturgical music. His most famous composition is Here I Am, Lord, based on texts from Isaiah and Samuel. Despite its Catholic origins, it is found in most Protestant hymnals and has been translated into over 20 different languages. In 2008, a survey conducted by the United Methodist Church found it to be 2ndfavorite after Amazing Grace.
Sidewalk Prophets is a Christian rock band from Nashville. The band was formed by lead singer Dave Frey and rhythm guitarist Ben McDonald when the two were attending Indiana's Andersen University. They released a self-titled independent album in 2003, and released their first studio album with Word Records titled These Simple Truths, which nominated for a Dove Award for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year. That same year they won New Artist of the Year, and the single The Words I Would Say, released on These Simple Truths, peaked at #3. Live Like That was the title song of the album of the same name, released by Sidewalk Prophets in 2012, and was nominated for Song of the Year in 2013 and peaked at #2.
The band Hillsong United was formed in 1998 from close friends within the Hillsong youth ministry (called "Powerhouse Youth"). So many songs were being written within the youth ministry that it was suggested they make an album. The songs One and Everyday were recorded and released with the annual Hillsong worship album in 1999. They both achieved gold sales status in Australia, and the band has gone on to win five Dove Awards in 2014 and were nominated for an American Music Award and won the Billboard Music Award Top Christian Artistin 2015. Their song You Are Here was released in 2008 on the album This Is Our God.
