From Pastor Molly: Yes, and...

Frequently, when I'm reading or studying different things, I find overlapping themes. This week, our Disciple Bible Study was reading the Exodus story of Moses and talking about deliverance. At the same time, our Gospel lesson for the week begins with a man with questions for Jesus about how to inherit eternal life.
I've been thinking about these various words and phrases people use to describe God's work in the world, and the goal of our faith: deliverance, being saved, inheriting eternal life, getting to heaven, the kingdom of God. And, for those less royal, the kin-dom of God. Each of them communicates something important about the goal of our faith, but I think none of them captures it completely. There's always a something more.
In comedy improv, one of the rules is "Yes, and..." If you're going to succeed at working together with others in improv, it's advisable to begin by saying "Yes." That is, if someone else comes up with an idea, you go with it. (You can't spend your time arguing about whether they made the right comic choice.) Then, you add something more. (That's the "and" bit.) You take it further.
Though improv isn't the same as working on our theology, this quality of "Yes, and..." has a lot to offer our work of describing God's work in the world. We're invite to look around us, in scripture, in our Christian tradition, in the world around us, to look for words that describe something true. And then we add more.
Our contributions take it further, as we seek to understand our God, who's ultimately beyond our description and bigger than our imaginations.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
This Sunday at 10:30, we get to welcome Karen Hart who will held lead worship on another Composer Sunday. It is a wonderful privilege to get to include in our worship the music of local, living composers and artists. I hope you will invite someone to come be a part of this special day!

See and Be Seen:
"Getting Your Priorities in Focus"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Mark 10:17-31
Mark 10:
17 As he was starting on his way, a man ran up, kneeled down in front of him and asked, “Good rabbi, what should I do to obtain eternal life?” 18 Yeshua said to him, “Why are you calling me good? No one is good except God! 19 You know the mitzvot — ‘Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t give false testimony, don’t defraud, honor your father and mother, . . .’”[Mark 10:19 Exodus 20:12–13(16); Deuteronomy 5:16–17(20)]20 “Rabbi,” he said, “I have kept all these since I was a boy.” 21 Yeshua, looking at him, felt love for him and said to him, “You’re missing one thing. Go, sell whatever you own, give to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come, follow me!” 22 Shocked by this word, he went away sad; because he was a wealthy man.
23 Yeshua looked around and said to his talmidim, “How hard it is going to be for people with wealth to enter the Kingdom of God!” 24 The talmidim were astounded at these words; but Yeshua said to them again, “My friends, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! 25 It’s easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.” 26 They were utterly amazed and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Yeshua looked at them and said, “Humanly, it is impossible, but not with God; with God, everything is possible.” 28 Kefa began saying to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Yeshua said, “Yes! I tell you that there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, 30 who will not receive a hundred times over, now, in the ‘olam hazeh, homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and lands — with persecutions! — and in the ‘olam haba, eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first!”
(Complete Jewish Bible).
Mark 10:17-31

Verse 17
[17] And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
Matthew 19:16; Luke 18:18.
Verse 20
[20] And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
He answering, said to him, Master — He stands reproved now, and drops the epithet good.
Verse 21
[21] Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
Jesus looking upon him — And looking into his heart, loved him - Doubtless for the dawnings of good which he saw in him: and said to him - Out of tender love, One thing thou lackest - The love of God, without which all religion is a dead carcass. In order to this, throw away what is to thee the grand hinderance of it. Give up thy great idol, riches. Go, sell whatsoever thou hast.
Verse 24
[24] And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
Jesus saith to them, Children — See how he softens the harsh truth, by the manner of delivering it! And yet without retracting or abating one tittle: How hard is it for them that trust in riches - Either for defence, or happiness, or deliverance from the thousand dangers that life is continually exposed to. That these cannot enter into God's glorious kingdom, is clear and undeniable: but it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a man to have riches, and not trust in them. Therefore, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom.
Verse 28
[28] Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.
Lo, we have left all — Though the young man would not.
Verse 30
[30] But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
He shall receive a hundred fold, houses, … — Not in the same kind: for it will generally be with persecutions: but in value: a hundred fold more happiness than any or all of these did or could afford. But let it be observed, none is entitled to this happiness, but he that will accept it with persecutions.(The John Wesley's Explanatory Notes)

Bob Peterson
Bob Peterson's popular column for the Mainsail has found new life, online! Read his view from the pews about church life and community news. You'll enjoy keeping up with the many good things happening in our congregation! by Bob Peterson
A Rummage Sale for our church and community was held Saturday Oct. 6 along with great food for lunch in the Epworth Lounge as prepared, served and cleaned up by the women of our church and their United Methodist Women. It was a success and everybody who worked, donated, shopped and ate can be grateful it is over and done with. Net proceeeds were about $7350! Another such event will happened in the Spring of 2019. Prepare for it.
This is the season of the year when the sun streams through our South facing window right onto Pastor Molly as she preaches. I refer to it as God's Spotlight on our guiding light at 11:00 AM and it happens twice a year, so enjoy it.
Molly's Sermon Title on September 30 was “Seeing Another Point of View” and it reminded me of a dear, long time friend, Bob Content, who passed on a few years ago. Bob, who went by his self designed moniker of “B. Content” Was a World War II pilot for the US Navy, followed by becoming an FBI Agent and later, a school teacher and summer camp director. All his life, he espoused on the theme, “How to Disagree without being Disagreeable” and much of his work with children urged that theme. I admired his efforts to that effect and certainly think our entire Nation needs that guiding light in life, politics and leadership. “B CONTENT” has left that as his legacy to all who knew him.
Wasn't it great that Sunday, to see sixteen choir members and to hear their Anthem. “A Gaelic Blessing”, by John Rutter sung so beautifully as led by Music Conductor Jim Raycroft. We are so fortunate to have such fine musicians enhance our 10:30 AM Worship Services each Sunday..

Jim Raycroft
Music Director, Jim Raycroft, will
share upcoming worship music
selections and a little bit of history, too. by Jim Raycroft

This week our Composer Sunday series continues as we welcome Karen Hart. Karen is a long-time friend who I first met in the 1990’s while we were singing together in the L.A. Master Chorale. Then, in 2002, I began an event I called “The Choral Taste of Los Angeles”. I felt that, with so much world-class choral music being written locally, there really needed to be an engine to get it out into the daylight. That year, there were 13 wonderful composers who presented their music, and Karen was one of them. I was bowled over by the variety and the quality of the craftsmanship of her music, not to mention her remarkable singing voice, which I hadn’t really heard until then. This week, we get to experience both her music and her voice.
Winner of the Song of the Year sponsored by West Coast Songwriters for her haunting ballad Mirabelle, Karen is also a 2 time recipient of Music Connection Magazine's Top 100 Artists, Best of Los Angeles Women in Music Award, a winner of the Barry Manilow /Concord Records Award for lyric writing, winner of Best Song by Los Angeles Songwriter's Co-op and she is a 3 time winner of Best Performer by West Coast Songwriters. Karen has been honored with 4 world premieres of her music at the Dorothy Chandler Los Angeles Music Center, and her songs for motion pictures have been singled out by Variety, People Magazine and the L.A. Times.
In a wide ranging career, you have heard Karen's singing voice in numerous motion pictures, as well as dozens of TV and radio spots: Karen is the singing voice of Sigourney Weaver in the Showtime movie Snow White, she wrote all of the songs for the Divine cult classic Lust In The Dust, and she has performed on numerous occasions with the Los Angeles Symphony and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
Karen's award winning choral music is performed and recorded worldwide. In major cities throughout the U.S. as well as 3 countries worldwide, Karen's unique choral work Judah and His Maccabees: A Hanukkah Gospel Story is performed every holiday season, and was premiered and recorded by America's Got Talent finalists Angel City Chorale.
From the U.S. to England, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Australia, Karen has sung at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II and opened for Stevie Wonder. She was a special guest at the inauguration of the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood. The Second Annual Beverly Hills International Chamber Music Festival honored Karen by featuring her composition as the finale of their concert series, where she was accompanied by an orchestra of child prodigies from around the world.
Karen's mini-musical The Odyssey of Mirabelle is built around her award winning Song of the Year, "Mirabelle." Bringing Mirabelle to the stage, Karen chronicles the adventures, setbacks and triumphs of the endearing Mirabelle through her life's journeys - from teenage years to marriage, raising a family, and ultimately into Mirabelle's golden years. Narrated by ABC's Nashville star Charles Esten (Deacon Claybourne), this collection of multiple award winning songs is the perfect foundation for the Odyssey of Mirabelle.
2015 marked Karen's debut in Mexico with an all-star lineup at the Magic Town Music Festival, where she debuted her tribute to Joni Mitchell. She continues paying tribute to Joni Mitchell with her band Raised On Robbery.
Karen's charitable work for the Veteran's Hospital and the Cancer Support Communities in Los Angeles remain her most treasured musical activities. Performing for the veterans who are unable to leave their beds, she receives continued inspiration. Songs from her CD 'Cause Life's Too Short, are inspired by these visits.
You can find her on the net at www.karenhartmusic.com/home.htmlClick here to read more Music Notes!
