Hurricane Michael devastates Florida
Hurricane Michael hit the Florida Panhandle Wednesday, 10 October, making landfall as the first Category 4 storm in the area in recorded history. With winds of up to 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour), the hurricane was the third most powerful hurricane to ever strike the U.S. mainland. The damage was severe: more than 900,000 homes and businesses in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas were without power, and many homes were ripped apart or washed away. So far, 12 deaths have been reported.
The storm moved fast and intensified quickly. Although 375,000 people were ordered to evacuate, many did not have time to prepare or didn’t realize how much worse the storm would get. The towns of Panama City and Mexico Beach were especially devastated. The storm lost force quickly and has now entered the Atlantic after moving northeast as a tropical storm.
The Georgia District Nazarene Disaster Response team, led by Pastor Kevin Thomas (recently returned from serving in North Carolina), is preparing a response to the town of Donalsonville, in the southwestern corner of the state. Pastor Scott Messer reported wind damage to the Donalsonville church, including the loss of the steeple, which crashed into the vestibule of the church. The church was sheltering evacuees at the time, and the community is thankful for no injuries to those in the building. This part of the state expects to be without power for three to four weeks.
Many roads in Florida remain impassible, and communication is still challenging. So far, the Florida District reported damage to the building and parsonage at First Church of the Nazarene in Port St. Joe, as well as widespread loss of electricity across the most affected counties. Without permission to re-enter neighborhoods in the Florida counties of Bay, Gulf, and Franklin, most of the damage to homes and churches there is still unknown. Churches are collecting supplies to donate to the area, and Nazarene Compassionate Ministries is partnering with World Hope to deliver supplies to the affected areas via airplanes. Pastor Francisco Ayala at the Nuevo Comienzo Compassion Ministry Church of the Nazarene in Mulberry, Florida, received 1,000 Crisis Care Kits from Fawn Grove Compassionate Ministry Center for the initial response, and another several hundred kits will arrive from elsewhere in Florida.
“Storm results are much worse than anticipated,” said Larry Dennis, Florida district superintendent. “We are gratefully overwhelmed by the prayers and offers to assist from our fellow Nazarenes across the country and around the world.”

Indonesia earthquake, tsunami death toll rises
The country of Indonesia continues to reel after a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck on 28 September. More than 5,000 people could still be missing in the towns of Baleroa and Petobo, where rivers of soil swept away entire neighborhoods. The confirmed death toll from the quake has now reached more than 2,000, with hundreds of people missing in central Sulawesi's largest city, Palu, the spokesperson of Indonesia's Disaster Management Agency told reporters in Jakarta on Sunday.
The Church of the Nazarene in Indonesia is assessing the situation with two separate initial teams and reaching out to partner organizations to pursue a possible coordinated effort. As the long-term recovery needs become clear, so will the response.
The Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Global Relief Fund exists to support this and other disasters around the world. Giving to this fund allows money to be funneled to local congregations as they minister to their suffering neighbors. The Global Relief Fund provides a response that works to meet both immediate and long-term needs.

Bonao, Dominican Republic

Youth evangelize in Dominican Republic community
A group of about 40 youth from the Dominican Republic and Haiti volunteered in a Maximum Mission event held 21-24 September in the community of Los Arroces in Bonao, Dominican Republic.
“FOCUS – Deny, Surrender, Follow Me” was the Maximum Mission theme, and the event focused on reaffirming the call to go and make disciples. The volunteers lived out this theme through community service and evangelistic outreach activities for other young people.
The team used sports and games to share the message of salvation with neighborhood children and youth, and they held a small group about beauty and self-worth for women. Eight youth received Jesus as their Lord and Savior through these outreach initiatives.
On Sunday night, they held a closing service where three more people received Christ into their lives. At the end of the Maximum Mission, the group baptized 12 youth from the Bonao Church of the Nazarene.
“The strategies that I used to evangelize in the small shops, homes, and in the streets of the community made me feel that God was with us and was speaking into people’s lives through me,” said Angel Duson, one of the youth volunteers on the trip.
The church has already begun holding small groups and weekly activities for those who received Christ through Maximum Mission. The groups found a place to meet and hope to begin holding Sunday services soon.
“During all of the activities, we could see how God worked in the lives of the people in the community through his servants,” said Elba Duson, Global Missions coordinator for the Dominican Republic West District. (Church of the Nazarene MesoamericaRead more

Mesoamerica coordinators pray, plan for missionary expansion
The Mesoamerica Global Missions team recently gathered for a time of reflection, prayer, and conversation about how to improve, recruit, train, and send more missionaries throughout the region.
The team — made up of the region’s five field coordinators and the Global Missions regional coordinators, Emily and Scott Armstrong — met 26 to 30 September in La Romana, Dominican Republic.
"Glory to God because He is calling many to the mission field," said Freya Galindo, Central Field coordinator. “We were able to hear the voice of God in different ways, especially when the team prayed for the Lord to guide them in future plans and decisions. Together we recognized that as a team we are not working for God, but actually we are working with God.”
On the last day, the group prayed for the 34 countries that make up the Mesoamerica Region, including field leaders, district leaders, and local churches.
"We invite you to join us in prayer for Global Missions so that God continues to raise more missionaries through this ministry to impact the nations," Galindo said. (Church of the Nazarene MesoamericaRead more

LC18 equips pastors, leaders for discipleship
Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries USA/Canada held its 2018 Leadership Conference 11-13 September at Springdale Nazarene Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Nearly 200 SDMI district and local church leaders from across the region participated in the semi-annual leadership conference. The event included a number of special plenary speakers and 35 educational workshops on a variety of subjects essential to discipleship.
One Team, One Mission, One Passion
“One Team, One Mission, One Passion” was the theme for this leadership summit. LaMorris Crawford, chaplain for the Cincinnati Bengals, opened the conference by addressing the first theme element, “One Team.” Mark Bane, director of Evangelism and New Church Development for USA/Canada Region, challenged attendees to consider how they are fulfilling SDMI’s “Mission”: the Great Commission. Holly Catterton Allen, professor of family studies and Christian ministries at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, shared a message called “One Passion: Discipling Children Together.” Springdale Church Senior Pastor Daryl Blank reminded everyone of the influence we have as we work in concert with the Holy Spirit. General Superintendent Filimão Chambo concluded the conference by sharing that we all are called to be united in “One Passion” for Christ.
The interactive workshop sessions provided opportunities for learning, discussion, and networking. Additionally, a variety of exhibitors provided resources and connections to ministries within the Church of the Nazarene. Video and audio files of the plenary sessions and a number of the workshops will be available on the SDMI website this month.
Community Bible Experience and Immerse
Each LC18 attendee received a New Testament copy of Immerse, a three-year Bible reading experience. This new resource is similar to the Community Bible Experience, a program SDMI staff introduced two years ago to help local churches grow in biblical literacy and outreach. The program was very successful among Nazarene churches, but its sponsor and producer recently chose not to continue the project in USA/Canada.
If you are interested in using Immerse, send an email to the SDMI office to receive more information about both the printed and online resources.
SDMI and M19
The next SDMI leadership event will be part of Mission 2019 (M19), the Church of the Nazarene’s mid-quadrennial conference for pastors, leaders, and students in USA/Canada. M19 is intentionally emphasizing the church’s call to mission and evangelism, and SDMI will offer ministry training through a variety of workshops at the conference. In addition, a special dinner event will offer SDMI leaders a chance to meet the new global director, Scott Rainey, and hear his vision for the future of SDMI. Visit m19conference.org to learn more. (Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries

Mesoamerica council plans for future
Leaders from across the Mesoamerica Region gathered 5-6 October in Panama City, Panama, to share both the growth and challenges they have experienced in different areas of ministry over the last year.
“It is an important time when we report the challenges and successes of the previous year, while also looking forward to the vision that God has for us in the upcoming year,” said Scott Armstrong, regional Global Missions coordinator.
Prior to the council meetings, from 2-4 October there were missionary trainings, regional coordinator meetings, and meetings with the field strategy coordinators.
“The RAC is the way the local church, through ministry representatives and lay people, receive an account from the regional leadership,” said Regional Director Carlos Saenz. “They also participate in the birth of strategies that impact the region. This year for the first time we had a participant from the Dutch Field, [Rigoni Hitzert].”
The council also interviewed six Nazarene missionaries for service as commissioned missionaries with the Church of the Nazarene. They were unanimously recommended by the region and will now be considered by global leaders for commissioning in February 2019. (Church of the Nazarene MesoamericaRead more
South America

Flags of the Nations: Brazil
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Brazil
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Brazil in 1958.
Brazil had a population of 207,353,391 in 2017. That same year, Brazil reported 666 Churches of the Nazarene, 579 of which had been officially organized. Brazil has 190,305 total members.
Located on the South America Region, Brazil has 12 Phase 3 districts, six Phase 2 districts, and one Phase 1 districts. For more information about the South America Region, visit samnaz.org.

Offering of Thanks: Sharing Christ’s love in 162 world areas
Every time you Followers of Christ are all called to be ambassadors of the Kingdom throughout the world. As the global Church of the Nazarene, you are doing exactly that. Not only are you showing Christ’s love to your neighbors locally, but you are also showing it to those thousands of miles away.
Nargiza’s redemption story began after surviving two suicide attempts when she was 13 years old. Not long after, a classmate invited her to church, setting her on a trajectory that would change her life forever.
“The reason why I wanted to commit suicide is because I believed no one loved me,” Nargiza said. “But when I came to Christ, I realized how much He loves me. [So] I didn’t just go to church, I really committed my life to Jesus.”
Today, Nargiza is not only alive and healthy, but she is a minister in the Church of the Nazarene.
“The difference between my life before Christ and after I accepted Him is that I have hope,” Nargiza said. “Through all the difficulties, God is with me, and I feel His love in my life.
Every time you pray for the church, participate in giving to Nazarene missions, or go on a missions trip, you share Christ’s love in 162 world areas and beyond, resulting in transformed lives.
Resources are now available for the upcoming Offering of Thanks for Nazarene missions. The offering website, nazarene.org/givethanks, includes promotional materials such as social media graphics, posters, brochures, a PowerPoint graphic, and bulletin inserts to support local churches. Read more
Celebrate Clergy Appreciation Month 2018
Throughout the month of October, churches around the world will show their appreciation for clergy and pastoral staff members in a variety of ways. These men and women can be celebrated through personal notes or gifts, by groups like a Sunday school class, or in larger settings with the entire congregation.
Here are some ideas:
  • Show one of the Board of General Superintendents Pastor Appreciation videos during a church service this month. Videos can be found on our Vimeo page.
  • Share a video on social media explaining what you appreciate about your pastor using #lovemynazpastor.
  • Organize a prayer calendar so each pastor is prayed for every day of the month.
  • Create a slideshow presentation of pastors in action during the past year. Set it to music and play it as a pre-service video.
  • Give clergy families a night out to a local restaurant or gift certificate for an overnight get-away.
  • Invite children to create artwork for the pastors.
  • Choose a day and have people text pastors hourly with a heartfelt message explaining how the pastors have positively impacted members.
  • Submit an article to the local newspaper bragging on your pastors and thanking them publicly.
  • Allow members of the congregation to volunteer time serving pastoral leaders by babysitting or helping with yard projects and other home maintenance.
  • Update your pastor’s office with new paint, décor, or a technology upgrade.
On behalf of the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center, thank you to pastors and all clergy for their labor and leadership in helping to make Christlike disciples in the nations. Read more
