Greetings Resurrection Blue Springs,
I can't believe it's the Fourth of July weekend already! The summer is passing quickly, although it hardly seems like summer with all the rain we've had. Our activities on Wednesday night had an added element of excitement this week with tornado sirens going off. Our Bible study group held most of their class in the hallway by the sanctuary. Thankfully the damage from the storms was minimal in our area.
I've been pleased to hear great reports from the men who went on the Men's Retreat last weekend. There were 25 guys that ventured out to Camp Timberlake for Friday evening and all day Saturday. Amidst the personal faith talks and small group discussion, there was a little archery, fly fishing lessons, smores around a campfire, Big Dawg's BBQ and beautiful weather to take in the rustic surroundings of the camp. Sounds like a good time to me. I want to thank Mark Maschger and his lead team for organizing this event. Our hope is to make it an annual event, so guys, if you missed out on this one, look for it to come around again next year.
The next event for men begins this next week with an "Iron Sharpens Iron" Men's study on Thursday nights at 8 pm. This will be an ongoing study that all men are invited to attend. Our women's group will also be starting a new study on the same night at 6:30 pm, beginning July 9th. This study will pick up on the recent "Why" sermon series, with discussion about how to overcome the stresses of this life. There is more information about both below.
I want to say a word about our upcoming outdoor baptism service. This service is an opportunity for people of all ages to receive the sacrament of baptism and for anyone who is feeling a desire to reaffirm their baptismal covenant and commitment to discipleship. We hold it at the Scott's backyard pool to enable an opportunity for an immersion experience of baptism for those who desire. Sprinkling is also an option. Anyone desiring baptism is invited to participate, along with their families and members of our church family. We’ll celebrate afterwards with some food and fellowship. Join us for this special event and bring a side dish to share on Sunday, July 12th at 5 pm. There will be a baptism meeting following 10:45 am worship on July 12th or you can make arrangements to meet with me personally for this meeting.
This weekend in worship we are continuing our sermon series on Parables and I’m pleased to be preaching live on the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. I’ll be sharing about God's instruction to forgive and what that looks like for us. It will be a Family Friendly Worship Weekend so bring the kids with you! (As a reminder we’ll still have KidsCOR programming for infants through 4 year olds.) I hope to see you this weekend in worship on Sunday and I want to wish you and your families a safe and happy Fourth of July Weekend!

“What Comes After Why?” Women’s Study – Thursday nights, July 9 – Aug. 13, 6:30-8 pm. This 6-week “light” summer Bible study looks at the recent sermon series based on Adam Hamilton’s book, Why? and readings from the Bible. Patricia Sanders-Hall will facilitate biblically-based discussions about specific ways we can cope with many of the harsh realities and stresses of life but still remain whole, joyful and faithful to our Lord. Life is what it is and this class is meant to be upbeat and fun for all! Note: Because it is the busy summer, each class will be developed to stand-alone and attendees are welcome to come to a few or all of the classes. NO HOMEWORK! Handout materials provided. Purchase of the book is optional. Please bring your Bible to class each week! Childcare available on request. Sign up at Guest Services or online here.
Special Baptism Service – Sunday, July 12, 5 pm The last few summers we have held an outdoor baptism service for anyone desiring to be baptized or who would like to re-affirm their baptism vows as a way to renew their commitment to God and the journey of discipleship. We will baptize by immersion or sprinkling in a short service and then have a time of fellowship afterwards with a potluck supper. The service will be held at the Scott’s backyard pool, 1308 NE Hilltop Dr. We'd love to have any and all attend and the baptism candidates are encouraged to invite family and friends. You're welcome to bring your swimsuits and swim afterwards too. Sign up here or at Guest Services. A brief pre-baptism meeting with Pastor Penny is a prerequisite to this event.
