Thousands killed, injured in Indonesian double disaster

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sulawesi island 28 September, triggering destructive tsunami waves as high as 6 meters (20 feet).
More than 1,200 people were killed and 800 were seriously injured. The earthquake and subsequent waves damaged more than 65,000 homes and displaced more than 60,000 people.
Government officials fear the death toll could increase dramatically since most of the confirmed dead have come from a single city, Palu. Some remote areas have been largely cut off due to the destruction of many roads and bridges, and the losses in those areas have yet to be determined.
Many people were reportedly trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings.
“The situation is chaotic,” Dwikorita Karnawati, from Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency, told Reuters. “People are running on the streets and buildings have collapsed. There is a ship washed ashore.”
The closest Church of the Nazarene is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) south of the affected area. Volunteers headed to the area for assessment, but it will take them several days to arrive.
"What we now desperately need is heavy machinery to clear the rubble,” said Muhammad Syaugi, head of the national search-and-rescue agency. “I have my staff on the ground, but it's impossible just to rely on their strength alone to clear this."Prayer is requested for the disaster victims and for those who are responding.

Regional writers’ conference supports emphasis on local literature creation
The South America Region recently hosted its first writers’ conference to train and support local pastors, educators, and leaders. The event is the fifth held in locations around the world to encourage the creation of materials on Nazarene identity, discipleship, and pastoral formation in various cultures.
The Peru conference, held 3-5 September in Lima, included 21 participants from across the country, including several representatives from the Peruvian jungle who traveled nearly 30 hours just to attend the event.
“The Church of the Nazarene is growing in many areas of the world,” said Frank Moore, general editor for the Church of the Nazarene. “Culturally relevant discipleship curriculum is essential to making Christlike disciples, and local writers are key to producing materials that best instruct believers to new levels of faith in Christ.”
Workshops were presented by Regional Education Coordinator Jorge Julca, Regional Literature Coordinator Patricia Picavea, Regional Marriage Ministry Coordinator German Picavea, Associate Editor for Adult Sunday School Curriculum Mery Asenjo, and Moore. Each speaker brought skills and experiences from various backgrounds, increasing the diverse workshop content at the conference.
“Being able to participate in the writers’ workshop was a great blessing and a privilege for those of us who had the opportunity to attend,” Julca said. “It was inspirational to see a group of sisters and brothers committed with the ministry of written communication.”
Each workshop challenged the participants to develop and improve their writing skills. They were also encouraged to take what they learned back to their local congregations so they could make better quality discipleship curriculum.
“I was extremely pleased with the level of scholarship and writing commitment of all [participants],” Moore said.
The leadership team considered the conference a success and is hoping to plan more initiatives like this in the future.
“We thank God and the Church of the Nazarene literature initiatives for promoting the development of this [conference],” Patricia Picavea said. “We trust that this will be the first of many more training opportunities for the region.”
The event was organized by the South America Literature Ministries, Theological Education Ministries, and Global Nazarene Publications.
“Jorge Julca, regional education coordinator, and Patrica Picavea, regional literature coordinator, worked closely together in planning the conference,” Moore said. “They did a great job in every way.” (Church of the Nazarene South AmericaRead more
Offering of Thanks: Sharing Christ’s love in 162 world areas
Followers of Christ are all called to be ambassadors of the Kingdom throughout the world. As the global Church of the Nazarene, you are doing exactly that. Not only are you showing Christ’s love to your neighbors locally, but you are also showing it to those thousands of miles away.
Nargiza’s redemption story began after surviving two suicide attempts when she was 13 years old. Not long after, a classmate invited her to church, setting her on a trajectory that would change her life forever.
“The reason why I wanted to commit suicide is because I believed no one loved me,” Nargiza said. “But when I came to Christ, I realized how much He loves me. [So] I didn’t just go to church, I really committed my life to Jesus.”
Today, Nargiza is not only alive and healthy, but she is a minister in the Church of the Nazarene.
“The difference between my life before Christ and after I accepted Him is that I have hope,” Nargiza said. “Through all the difficulties, God is with me, and I feel His love in my life.
Every time you pray for the church, participate in giving to Nazarene missions, or go on a missions trip, you share Christ’s love in 162 world areas and beyond, resulting in transformed lives.
Resources are now available for the upcoming Offering of Thanks for Nazarene missions.
The offering website, nazarene.org/givethanks, includes promotional materials such as social media graphics, posters, brochures, a PowerPoint graphic, and bulletin inserts to support local churches.Read more

La Romana, Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic Oriental District emphasizes commitment to missions
More than 400 people from the Dominican Republic Oriental District gathered last week to celebrate local evangelism and discipleship work.
The annual event, Committed to the Mission, began in 2010 after the Dominican Republic held a conference for district superintendents, pastors, and other leaders. During his message, then General Superintendent Jerry Porter asked the question “Who are you discipling and who is discipling you?”
Yudén and the District Advisory Board were inspired by the question and came up with the concept of the Committed to the Mission event.
Now, the event takes place during the last week of September and coincides with the Week of the Bible — a local weeklong celebration in La Romana.
“During the event, attendees were encouraged to pray for at least 10 people,” Yudén said. “After two months, every church celebrates an evangelistic service where those people who prayed over are invited.”
Through fellowship and intercessory prayer, 23 people were baptized at this year’s event and several of the youth said they have received calls to ministry.
“It was a marvelous day,” Yudén said. “God glorified himself in a great way. People sang, worshiped, danced, prayed, and interceded. [The event] surpassed [all of our] expectations.” (Church of the Nazarene MesoamericaRead more
Celebrate Clergy Appreciation Month 2018
Throughout the month of October, churches around the world will show their appreciation for clergy and pastoral staff members in a variety of ways. These men and women can be celebrated through personal notes or gifts, by groups like a Sunday school class, or in larger settings with the entire congregation.
Here are some ideas:
  • Show one of the Board of General Superintendents Pastor Appreciation videos during a church service this month. Videos can be found on our Vimeo page.
  • Share a video on social media explaining what you appreciate about your pastor using #lovemynazpastor.
  • Organize a prayer calendar so each pastor is prayed for every day of the month.
  • Create a slideshow presentation of pastors in action during the past year. Set it to music and play it as a pre-service video.
  • Give clergy families a night out to a local restaurant or gift certificate for an overnight get-away.
  • Invite children to create artwork for the pastors.
  • Choose a day and have people text pastors hourly with a heartfelt message explaining how the pastors have positively impacted members.
  • Give each Sunday in October a special emphasis related to something appreciated about each of your congregation’s pastoral leaders (personality qualities, gifting, family, etc.) with a special tribute, recollection, etc. Consider giving a gift that relates to the emphasis.
  • Allow members of the congregation to volunteer time serving pastoral leaders by babysitting or helping with yard projects and other home maintenance.
  • Update your pastor’s office with new paint, décor, or a technology upgrade.

On behalf of the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center, thank you to pastors and all clergy for their labor and leadership in helping to make Christlike disciples in the nations. Read more

SANBC hosts professional development, theology, anniversary events
South Asia Nazarene Bible College recently hosted four days of training and celebration for pastors, educators, leaders, and students across two locations.
Improving methods
In Bangalore, India, the college held a two-day professional development seminar that brought together 63 leaders and pastors from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The group reviewed the role of SANBC education in the Church of the Nazarene and focused on two themes: education as spiritual formation and quality assurance.
Representatives from European Nazarene College presented the quality assurance model they use, and the group examined how to modify this model to suit the needs of SANBC. They also discussed how to adequately address current and future challenges, learned new teaching skills, and optimized SANBC educational goals for higher scholastic performance.
The gathering provided valuable networking opportunities and revealed possibilities for future cooperation among church leaders, inspiring Nazarenes to grow deeper in spiritual life.
The seminar was followed by the college’s third Wesleyan Theology Conference, a contextualized continuation of the Global Theology Conference held in the United States in March 2018.
During the conference, SANBC faculty presented papers on topics including Christology, missiology, and religious pluralism in the Indian and South Asian contexts.
Stéphane Tibi, the regional education coordinator, was impressed by the quality of the papers at the theology conference. Tibi and Dean Blevins, professor of practical theology and Christian discipleship at Nazarene Theological Seminary, Kansas City, USA, are considering publishing a few of the papers in Didache, a Nazarene scholarly journal.
“It is a joy to see the theological maturity of my Indian brothers and sisters and their very meaningful contribution to our global theological community,” Tibi said.
A follow-up professional development seminar for Nepal will be conducted in November, along with another Wesleyan Theology Conference.
Commemorating accomplishments
The college then switched to celebration mode in observation of its 20th anniversary. The ceremony highlighted many of the school’s accomplishments, including some of the creative ways they prepare ministers in India and South Asia. Leaders shared the history of SANBC, from its original establishment as Nazarene Bible College India to its current format as a decentralized program for all of India and South Asia. The event also recognized those who contributed to the college’s founding.
The college’s anniversary was also celebrated during a graduation service in Bangladesh where more than 40 students from all five Bangladeshi districts received their diplomas. The graduates included many women who are actively engaged in full-time ministry.
Several students publicly shared their testimonies of how theological education through SANBC transformed their lives. Each student was honored with stoles, certificates, and gifts. After the certificate presentation, the leaders prayed over and dedicated the students for the ministry of God, expressing thankfulness for God’s blessings toward the churches and districts of Bangladesh.
Expanding education
More than 1,800 students are currently studying toward a Diploma in Theology in over 120 local churches — called learning centers — in 15 languages. Seventy-four qualified faculty provide leadership in this endeavor.
SANBC continues to grow in new districts and will be adding new programs in the years ahead. In the next 10 years, the college’s goal is to produce 10,000 new pastors in alignment with the strategy of the India and South Asia fields. (Church of the Nazarene EurasiaRead more

Flags of the Nations: Uruguay
The flag of Uruguay (2015 photo) features nine stripes of alternating white and blue, with white on the top and bottom stripes. In the upper-left corner of the flag, the canton is white with a golden sun, which has 16 rays of sunshine. The sun, called the Sun of May, is a national symbol of Uruguay, representing the Inca sun god Inti.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Uruguay
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Uruguay in 1949.
Uruguay had a population of 3,360,148 in 2017. That same year, Uruguay reported 76 Churches of the Nazarene, 73 of which had been officially organized. Uruguay has 6,156 total members.
Uruguay has two Phase 3 districts. It is a part of the South America Region.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. MNU provides new program to help repay student loans
Student loan debt is a growing problem in the U.S., but school seniors and parents are not alone in their concern. MidAmerica Nazarene University officials announced Pioneer Pledge, a program designed to help repay student loans.
Beginning with freshmen and eligible transfer students enrolling in fall 2019, this safety net will assist with repaying student loans after graduation from MNU if the graduate’s annual income is below $43,000. The lower the graduate’s income, the higher the percentage of repayment — up to 100 percent — until their income increases.
MNU is the first university in Kansas and Missouri to provide this program for all new students.
“We are making this pledge because we believe that strongly in the transformative education at MNU,” said David Spittal, MNU president. “We want our students to feel confident in pursuing their passions after graduation, such as public service, ministry, or other pursuits instead of having to make career choices based solely on long-term debt.
Students say Pioneer Pledge has already helped them have confidence about repaying their student loans.
“This will help me so much,” said Kyessence Collins, a freshman communications major from Kansas City, Missouri. “It gives me a stress reliever about everything now.”
MNU is determined to help future students.
“We’re serious about providing peace of mind about the cost of an education at MNU,” said Mary Jones, provost. “This lets graduates consider internships and other positions that can enhance their long-term career options, even if they earn less initially.”
