Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Chrostek - Friday, 24 July 2015 from The Resurrection United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, United StatesFriday, July 24, 2015

Greetings RezDowntowners!
It is great to write you this Friday morning. I hope this message finds you doing well. We’ve had another great week in downtown Kansas City playing host to another group of Middle School students from Resurrection West. It was so great to witness the way that God is speaking to and using these middle school students to transform the world. It has been such a life-giving privilege to have them with us. In addition to our middle school group, we hosted a great Marriage Enrichment event on Wednesday night. Lots of couples turned out on Wednesday night to focus their hearts and minds on enriching their love and relationships in Christ-centered ways. It was awesome to see so many people show up for this great event! Thank you for turning out in such great numbers!
This weekend in worship we’re kicking off our new sermon series on Resurrection at the Movies. We’ll begin our series by taking a look at Pixar’s Inside Out. Pastor Todd Maberry will be preaching live a message centering on finding joy inside through outward pain. It is going to be a powerful message that will end with a sweet giveaway that will make for a great summer worship experience. I hope you’ll invite friends and join us in worship. Also, if you haven’t seen Inside Out yet, don’t worry as this message will be relevant for those who have seen the movie and for those who haven’t.
Lastly, As I type this message, I am preparing for a trip to England to be a part of our church-wide Revival Tour retracing and recounting the life and impact of John Wesley in the world of Methodism! I am really excited about this trip, there will be seven RezDowntowners and over 100 others from our various campuses. I’ll be sure to share updates frequently on Facebook, so please stay tuned.
In the meantime, below you’ll find several ways to get connected to the life of this community over the next few weeks. Please check them out and get plugged in!

Wendell Phillips Volunteer Training – Interested in investing your time in the life of a child who desperately needs it? Resurrection Downtown has a long-term relationship with Wendell Phillips Elementary School (the closest public school to us) and we want our people serving in the schools. We have a required training scheduled for those wanting to serve in the school, onSaturday, July 25, from 1-4 pm at 1522 McGee. This training will provide you with insight on serving children in poverty and take care of all the background checks and answer any questions you may have. Part of the training will be online, so bring a laptop computer or tablet if you have one. Are you wanting to serve but that date does not work for you? You can also receive the training through the Leawood campus on Saturday, August 1. To register, complete the form atrezdowntown.org/volunteertraining or contact Pastor Todd.Maberry@cor.org.
Back to School Supplies and Uniform Drive. The start of the school year can be expensive and purchasing school supplies may not fit into a family’s budget when they are struggling to provide for basic needs. Quite often, teachers will pay out of their own pockets for the supplies that students need. Rez Downtown has a long-term commitment to Wendell Phillips, and we have a goal of providing the school supplies and uniforms for every child in that school. This is the last weekend to pick up a bag in the Sanctuary to purchase school supplies. Or you can give money to purchase uniforms for the students. Return all school supplies and money for uniforms by next Sunday, August 2.
Christmas in October – The Church of the Resurrection mobilizes hundreds of volunteers for Christmas in October each year to help improve the living conditions of elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners in Kansas City. Lend your hands and hearts to this worthwhile community effort Saturday, October 10, and make a tangible difference for someone in need. If you can use a paint brush, rake, caulk gun, putty knife, hammer, wrench, broom, etc. – we’ve got a job for you! No special skills needed; volunteers must be age 14 or older. House Captains and Co-Captains are also needed to help oversee a team of volunteers. To learn more and to sign up, visitcor.org/christmasinoctober.
Save the Date – The First Women’s Retreat for Resurrection Downtown! Join other women onSaturday, August 29, 9 am – 2 pm, to learn more about spiritual wellness from our guest speaker, Pastor Anne Williams. We will create prayer journals to continue this spiritual journey during our own time, participate in a relaxing beginners’ yoga class taught by Shannon Wheeler, and put together wellness bags for the women at Rose Brooks Center. A light breakfast will be provided and lunch will be a joint effort, so we are asking everyone to bring an item to share. Register for this event online at rezdowntown.org/womensretreat. The cost is $25 per person; scholarships available. Start collecting travel-size hygiene products for the wellness bags (even the guys can do this!) For more information, contact Kristen Sayers at klynsayers@gmail.com.
Please know that I consider it a privilege to serve Christ alongside you in this city. I hope you'll invite friends and join us this Saturday and Sunday in worship as together we continue building Christian community in the center of this city. Have a God-filled Friday and I'll look forward to seeing you soon! Be sure to check in on Facebook to see updates from England.
Grace and Peace,
Scott
